Donald Trump<\/a> has threatened to \u201cblow up\u201d Oman if it fails to \u201cbehave\u201d in a casual aside during a cabinet meeting, as the US scrambles to reopen the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The US president made the threat after reports of talks between Iran<\/a> and Oman about jointly charging a toll for ships passing through the crucial waterway, which has been all but closed since the start of the US-Israel<\/a> war on Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strait is going to be open to everybody,\u201d Trump declared on Tuesday. \u201cNobody\u2019s going to control it. We\u2019re going to watch over it. We\u2019ll watch over it. But nobody\u2019s going to control it. That\u2019s part of the negotiation that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n

The strait \u2013 which typically carries about a fifth of the world\u2019s oil supplies \u2013 has been blockaded by Iran since late February, triggering a global energy crisis and raising fears for the world economy.<\/p>\n

Tehran wants to persuade Oman, a US ally, to support a mechanism to collect tolls from vessels transiting through the strait, the Associated Press has reported in recent days, citing a regional official.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would like to control it,\u201d said Trump, who stressed the strait is part of international waters.<\/p>\n

In an extraordinary threat, he added: \u201cOman will behave just like everybody else. Or else we\u2019ll have to blow them up. They understand that. They\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s efforts in recent weeks to strike a peace deal with Iran have so far failed to bear fruit. During Wednesday\u2019s meeting, he accused Iran of trying to stall the agreement and \u201coutwait me\u201d until November\u2019s midterm elections in the US.<\/p>\n

When Trump signalled he was on the verge of a deal at the weekend, Republican hawks who had strongly backed his controversial decision to order war on Iran alongside Israel issued a rare rebuke.<\/p>\n
