What does that mean for your premium?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-OLQRWZA2PFH7BACFGHA2CACC7Y\">Your next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/09\/16\/abu-dhabis-adgm-boosts-data-protection-for-insurance-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/09\/16\/abu-dhabis-adgm-boosts-data-protection-for-insurance-and-education\/\">insurance premium<\/a> could be shaped by what satellites can see from space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-HSO7PDXG7FGNZKLQHTSZB3H5HY\">UAE insurers are beginning to use satellite imagery and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2026\/05\/26\/pope-leo-ai-warning-encyclical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2026\/05\/26\/pope-leo-ai-warning-encyclical\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> to assess flood, fire and property risks more accurately, raising hopes of faster claims and fairer pricing \u2013 but also concerns over privacy, transparency and whether some customers could be priced out of cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-PFLWBCSP7RBBJED6DAOU7EOZME\">Analysts say the technology could make insurance more precise, but warn that without clear rules it may also lead to higher premiums, denied coverage or discriminatory pricing in areas seen as more exposed to climate risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-4CFF5K46RFGXLPKNZLWCKZS76A\">Proponents say satellite data is a win for risk accuracy and climate resilience \u2013 and that&#8217;s a valid point. But critics warn it is a privacy minefield and a potential tool for redlining, potentially resulting in discriminatory practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-2BJOXG7V5JEVXG5YOFDJIK3ZQM\">\u201cWith great data comes great responsibility \u2013 or great temptation. Insurers can use satellite insights to justify premium hikes or deny coverage, especially in climate-vulnerable areas like wild fire zones or flood plains,\u201d Inci Kaya, a research manager for insurance digital strategies at the International Data Corporation, told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-3RGPEKX2RVA3TNNSKOKXGLSUD4\">\u201cThis is understandable as they would be assuming greater risk, but [it is] difficult to explain to policyholders who will see it as a money grab. Unchecked, advanced data can become a shield for discriminatory practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data collection<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-IVJRKUWQ7VCXPGSVO7ARYPATQU\">In the age of Big Data, the collection of personal information is important for companies as it helps them understand their base and, in common PR speak, \u201chelp serve them better\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-Z7TDFIE3QBDAXBPY53YJB6KPKY\">\u201cIn most cases, better data leads to more accurate, not higher, pricing. Insurance pricing depends on how well risk is understood and how effectively it is managed, and improved data supports both,\u201d Aoun Al Smadi, chief executive of UAE digital insurance platform Shory, told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-AK4H75VJUJHAZDNGMCWBNZGTQA\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/05\/08\/uae-announces-49-billion-in-industrial-deals-at-make-it-in-the-emirates-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/05\/08\/uae-announces-49-billion-in-industrial-deals-at-make-it-in-the-emirates-summit\/\">last month&#8217;s Make it in the Emirates summit<\/a>, Shory signed a preliminary agreement with Abu Dhabi&#8217;s space and defence manufacturer Orbitworks to explore opportunities on satellite imaging and insurance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" type=\"image\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/media\/VX53ZtfM\/poster.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Robot in kandura tours Make it in the Emirates<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-D7J3YFN2LRH2TKT6VOXMGXPTG4\">Regulators, however, have been repeatedly warning companies not to misuse data. For instance, the EU AI Act is expected to become a global template for regulating AI and data use in insurance, with strict requirements for transparency, bias mitigation and consumer rights, Ms Kaya said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-4LJ2HAKXUVCAVAMMMMNVQD4AEI\">However, modern high-definition and high-resolution imagery is blurring the line, thanks to that constant monitoring of assets, said Oliver Cornock, editor in chief of Oxford Business Group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-EIBLRHDNBFBNTH63ZYSPSFW52U\">\u201cIncreasingly, gone are the days of a one-time home inspection; satellites offer the option of continuous monitoring. This can raise concerns with regard to invasion of the right to privacy in one&#8217;s own backyard,\u201d he told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-75TTQJDHQBG2BEAHHLO7UCDHCA\">Shory, meanwhile, is deep into developing its own AI models in-house, seeking to use Big Data to assess risk, Mr Al Smadi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-UX3UTU2MLRCTDOLCAIRNPEZ6HI\">\u201cOver time, this should help reduce uncertainty, lower claims and potentially lead to more competitive pricing for customers, rather than increasing premiums,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-R3WW45TZNRDNRISFO4NSX37XTA\">\u201cAs such, privacy risks are considered limited, and any future applications or opportunities explored within the domain would remain subject to applicable local insurance and data protection regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is its pricing fair?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-EWU25KJVVRCVPJNJJ3QHW27ZOY\">For now, consumer awareness remains limited, partly because most clients are not involved in the survey or risk assessment stage of the quotation process, Hitesh Khanchandani, co-founder of Dubai-based NewTech Insurance Brokers, told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-NYT5WC4LTJGETANUH2ZWUNT3Q4\">\u201cAnd because the technology has its limitations, insurers don&#8217;t tend to lead with it in client conversations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-JGHFNKD3OJEVHDHX3M6L26YYAI\">\u201cWhere you do see awareness is among larger, more sophisticated clients \u2013 particularly those with experienced, well-informed insurance managers who understand how risk is being assessed and are engaged enough to ask the right questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-L7XMELQKX5GDNG4KV4HWLJ3LOA\">The IDC notes that satellite data is increasingly quantifiable, increasing premium variability across geographies by enabling more granular, risk-adjusted pricing. AI and satellite-powered models are driving a shift from pooled, averaged risk pricing to individualised, real-time pricing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-BODHOGMPMFEMLASN6VKJL43VZA\">The Boston-based research company predicts that by 2029, 30 per cent to 40 per cent of insurers globally will launch AI and satellite-data-powered climate risk covers. Climate-exposed regions will feel the effects most profoundly, and will continue to, as adoption of AI and satellite powered models grows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-AQZ5QQCENBBLLNXTIH4Q5YNRDA\">Globally, insurance companies are increasing their use of satellite and aerial imagery to drive efficiencies. Viewing the Earth from above gives them quick and efficient means to monitor and assess insured assets and surrounding environments, according to Space Imaging Middle East, a Dubai-based geospatial solutions provider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-28-FLKICWH565G6VG6UZGPVYSHICE\">But more data does not necessarily translate to fairer pricing, because without full transparency in place, granular risk models \u2013 those that are diversified across a number of assets \u2013 can just as easily become tools for excluding policyholders from future coverage, Ms Kaya said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-JDQCMB64BZHZNHIFLFVQFY76LA\">\u201cSatellite imagery promises precision for insurers, which is great, but on the flip side we have to think about fairness. These two factors will colour how models are built and governed, beyond the data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Explain with AI<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-OIYSUJ4CHNDPHFIQT6SRNL22UY\">This is where explainable AI \u2013 which is used to describe an AI model&#8217;s expected impacts and potential biases, which in turn helps characterise accuracy, fairness, outcomes and transparency \u2013 comes into play, especially as regulators are tightening the screws on AI use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-OYBIKOLQW5FZ7F5MSAECOFHGJM\">\u201cExplainable AI isn&#8217;t a buzzword; it&#8217;s the new baseline for pricing models if insurers want to avoid regulatory heat \u2026 insurers and regulators must ensure that pricing models are explainable, auditable and regularly tested for bias,\u201d Ms Kaya said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-BPY7NKYLWZG67EYTEMHMYSP7HM\">Mr Al Smadi acknowledged that insurance is complicated \u2013 and some types of risk are \u201creally complicated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-SHIRAQR3VRGODJCORTH4PZVQII\">But, &#8220;[AI] helped us \u2026 ensure some risks that we were not able to insure before because now we&#8217;re able to assess [them much faster], cutting the time from weeks to days and sometimes hours\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Be proactive<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-36-NA7TGARPABHHFNMSA4DIUVM54M\">Insurers can adopt the technology without building satellite infrastructure themselves by working with specialist InsurTech and geospatial companies, said Vidya Veerapandian, co-founder and host of the FS Brew Insurtech and Insurance Podcast, based in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-37-S24AR2D2JJGFXJQKJRVKJDQCV4\">\u201cTo ensure it is viable to adopt these technologies, insurers can collaborate with the vibrant InsurTechs and wider geospatial tech start-ups, which are producing highly accessible, API-driven tools that mid-tier and smaller insurers can plug into without building satellite infrastructure themselves,\u201d she told The National. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-38-ALQS6VBQIRBPHEAGWIEDKDK2PU\">Natural catastrophe risks \u2013 earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones and floods \u2013 are the biggest concerns, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2024\/05\/02\/dubai-uae-weather-floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2024\/05\/02\/dubai-uae-weather-floods\/\">the UAE floods of 2024<\/a> were a prime example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-39-OJZNWS6GOFFATCVV46AWQKYJ6E\">\u201cInsurance has always been priced on what we can&#8217;t see, including a customer&#8217;s questionnaire, photos, postcode average and claims history \u2013 but satellites change that,\u201d Mr Khanchandani said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-40-LF27EOLQN5DFNLUGHFAPYEWVCU\">\u201cUnderwriters can now look at the actual roof, the actual neighbourhood, the actual flood path. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/04\/26\/sheikh-hamdan-reviews-intervention-vehicle-designed-to-tackle-flooding-in-dubai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/04\/26\/sheikh-hamdan-reviews-intervention-vehicle-designed-to-tackle-flooding-in-dubai\/\">the April 2024 floods<\/a>, this isn&#8217;t a future conversation in the UAE \u2013 it&#8217;s already happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" type=\"image\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/media\/kLxZ59YW\/poster.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sharjah shops reopen after recovery from flooding<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-42-7OLEOVD6FBCSJLCRI37AFSJTSM\">According to analysts at France&#8217;s Axa, one of the world&#8217;s biggest insurance companies, imagery can help underwriters model the impact of a flood on a site and visualise the risk in the context of the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-43-XOHP34P6NBB4PLP5AVPSTWIV2Q\">\u201cUsed in combination with high-resolution aerial or drone imagery, it provides an unprecedented situational awareness in time and in space,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-44-EGM57QFBYRHMJGY36UH6I26OHI\">\u201cThe better underwriters understand the risk, the more able they are to apply appropriate premiums and conditions, or recommend loss prevention actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-45-O6HS7SJTFBGHJBXYFABEBZYKXY\">In the UAE, Abu Dhabi&#8217;s Space42 \u2013 formed from a merger between Bayanat and Al Yah Satellite Company \u2013 is the premier provider of the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-46-EVOJHDB2AVF33BG2FZVSE5EGEM\">\u201cWhen we combine insurance technology with robust data that we can read from the satellite data that we receive, that&#8217;s what will make the difference,\u201d Mr Al Smadi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-47-WCSZVCYCB5B37C3UQUMQ2HKZUA\">\u201cThere is always a way to ensure [accuracy] even in high risks when we have enough data around those risks \u2026 this type of big data cannot be dealt with without the right AI technology in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-48-ONXKQANF4FHD7IRP5EBJHBZEJI\">According to industry estimates, remote assessment can cut the processing time of claims by as much as 70 per cent, with most straightforward claims potentially settled in days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-49-WETE4PRYZRBNFFALCMFX6HGEL4\">\u201cThat speeds up legitimate claims and reduces inflated ones \u2013 and the cost of fraud is something every policyholder currently pays for in their premium,\u201d Mr Khanchandani added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-50-P5RYVW25LVFUHLJHT67GT6RLDU\">For customers, the promise is faster claims and more accurate pricing. The risk is that the same technology could make insurance harder or more expensive to obtain if models are not transparent, explainable and closely regulated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-51-VPYC6WAZ3JB5DGWHFSIZYSRIZA\">As satellite data becomes part of the insurance process, the question is no longer whether insurers can see more \u2013 but how they use what they see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Your next insurance premium could be shaped by what satellites can see from space.
