{"id":471285,"date":"2026-05-28T12:53:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T12:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/471285\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T12:53:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T12:53:08","slug":"electric-ireland-customers-to-pay-up-to-e138-more-annually-under-new-price-rises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/471285\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Ireland customers to pay up to \u20ac138 more annually under new price rises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electric Ireland has announced <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/cost-of-living_topic-5127492.html\">price increases<\/a> that will see households pay an average of \u20ac138 extra annually on electricity bills and \u20ac117 more on gas bills.<\/p>\n<p>The company announced the increases on Thursday, with the changes set to take effect from July 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The move will affect 1.1 million electricity customers and around 145,000 gas customers. Electricity bills will rise by 8%, while gas bills will increase by 7.7%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe conflict in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/middle-east_topic-5282549.html\">Middle East<\/a> continues to drive volatility in wholesale energy costs which have increased significantly,\u201d its executive director Pat Fenlon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe current change represents the first price increase since October 2022; unfortunately, we cannot delay this increase any further due to the sustained upward price pressure on our wholesale energy costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe understand that many customers face challenges with ongoing cost of living pressures. Supporting our customers continues to be our priority.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The announcement comes almost a month after <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41837696.html\">a similar move by PrePayPower<\/a>, amid concerns that other suppliers could follow with price increases in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It also follows recently published figures showing Ireland already has the highest electricity costs in the EU, with prices here 40% higher than the European average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Darragh Cassidy, head of communications at Bonkers.ie, said the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/energy-prices_topic-5114793.html\">increase had been widely expected<\/a> and may even have arrived sooner following Electric Ireland\u2019s \u201cprice freeze\u201d last winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo, while today\u2019s announcement will understandably worry households, it\u2019s not necessarily the start of another widespread round of electricity price hikes across the market,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEven after this increase, for example, Electric Ireland\u2019s standard electricity rates will still be lower than most of the other suppliers in the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat said, the picture for gas is slightly different.
