{"id":471345,"date":"2026-05-28T13:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T13:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/471345\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T13:38:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T13:38:08","slug":"current-and-former-lord-mayor-unveil-refurbished-cork-sculpture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/471345\/","title":{"rendered":"Current and former lord mayor unveil refurbished Cork sculpture\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">The recently-restored \u2018Off Shore\u2019 sculpture at Blackrock was unveiled this week by Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The restored piece, originally created by renowned sculptor John Burke, was unveiled on Monday by Mr Dennehy and his father, former lord mayor John Dennehy \u2014 who played a central role in the original Cork 800 programme, from which the sculpture emerged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Dennehy said unveiling the restored sculpture alongside his father was \u201cespecially meaningful\u201d as he was \u201ca driving force\u201d behind the Cork 800 celebrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThis restoration ensures the work can continue to be appreciated by residents and visitors for many years to come,\u201d\u00a0\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">said Mr Dennehy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Burke, who died in 2006, was a pioneering sculpturist who was one of the most significant figures in the history of sculpture in Ireland in the second half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He was also instrumental in defining sculptural practice in Ireland during the 1970s, and as a lecturer at the Crawford School of Art, influenced a generation of prominent Irish artists, including Eil\u00eds O\u2019Connell, Vivienne Roche, Maud Cotter, and Jim Buckley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">His piece, \u2018Off Shore\u2019, was commissioned in 1985 as part of a sculpture symposium held at the former AnCO training centre in Bishopstown, and was supported by Cork 800 \u2014 the programme established by the then Cork Corporation to mark the 800th anniversary of the city\u2019s 1185 charter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The restoration of \u2018Off Shore\u2019 was supported by the members of Cork City Council\u2019s south east local area committee and Cork City Council\u2019s arts office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The Council\u2019s arts office also restored the large John Burke sculpture, \u2018Kingfisher\u2019, at Wilton roundabout in collaboration with the south west local area committee in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">These pieces, and Mr Burke\u2019s \u2018The Red Cardinal\u2019 at the Department of Health in Dublin, are among his most enduring public works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The recently-restored \u2018Off Shore\u2019 sculpture at Blackrock was unveiled this week by Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy.
