One of Dublin city’s most iconic restaurants is to shut after 55 years to make way for a new idea.<\/p>\n
Captain Americas on Grafton Street, which first opened in 1971, will close this weekend. It’s set to make way for a new idea – The Grafton Tavern.<\/p>\n
The venue will remain a bar and restaurant, and the only venue on Grafton Street with a licensed pub. The new concept takes inspiration from Paris and New York, a statement from the owners said.<\/p>\n
The restaurant will remain under the ownership of the McKillen family, who took over in 1993 from original owner Mark Kavanagh. It follows a raft of legal issues for the family after the company that owned the restaurant entered examinership.<\/p>\n
The company has also been in dispute over the use of the Captain Americas name. The Blanchardstown restaurant of the same name is unaffected by the change.<\/p>\n
According to The Journal, the family said: “Captain Americas has been part of Dublin<\/a> life for generations and we are immensely proud of its legacy.
