{"id":472988,"date":"2026-05-29T11:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T11:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/472988\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T11:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T11:53:09","slug":"gript-editor-john-mcguirk-resigns-and-accuses-co-owner-of-making-him-the-fall-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/472988\/","title":{"rendered":"Gript editor John McGuirk resigns and accuses co-owner of making him the \u2018fall guy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n             Gript editor John McGuirk has quit the conservative <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/media_topic-5047616.html\">news website<\/a> with a resignation letter that criticised its co-owner and accused her of making him the \u201cfall guy\u201d for controversial editorial decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McGuirk has been suspended since late March.  Gript sources say he faced allegations of a conflict of interest, the leaking of company financial information and a governance issue. He denies the allegations, the  Irish Times reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In his letter of resignation sent on Thursday to Niamh U\u00ed Bhriain,  Gript\u2019s assistant editor and 50 per cent shareholder, Mr McGuirk accused her of making him the \u201cfall guy\u201d while she \u201ccalled the shots\u201d in private.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The letter criticises Ms U\u00ed Bhriain, a former anti-abortion general election candidate and a director of the Pro-Life Institute, for ignoring his editorial advice on a number of  Gript\u2019s controversial stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI have decided to resign because life is too short to continue to tolerate a situation where I have been placed on leave of absence for nine weeks,\u201d the letter states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIn that time, there has been no progress or sign of progress, and I have heard not a single word from you in that time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">During his suspension, Mr McGuirk alleged that  Gript published articles that reflected poorly on him as editor and, in his view, breached  Gript\u2019s obligations under the Press Council code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The  Irish Times asked Ms U\u00ed Bhriain to comment on a series of allegations made in Mr McGuirk\u2019s letter.
