It’s been slated to get an upgrade to improve visibility and take out blind spots that can catch drivers out, especially at peak periods like the morning work and school run.<\/p>\n
But until those works are carried out, the junction at Ballinrea outside Carrigaline remains what one local says is a ‘disaster of a junction’ where there are regularly bad crashes, including two in the last couple of days. Four cars involved in two separate two-car collisions are believed to have been written off, but thankfully, there were no serious injuries.<\/p>\n
Carrigaline Fire Service have taken to social media to urge people to take care at this spot, which is a notoriously bad accident blackspot, often used by motorists trying to get around busy Carr’s Hill.<\/p>\n
Posting to social media, the Fire Service said two accidents in two days at the same spot underlined the dangers, with the latest accident this morning prompting them to say: “We are in attendance for yet another 2 car RTC at Ballinrea crossroads. Please avoid the area where possible as the traffic is getting heavy for the school run.<\/p>\n
Everyone is ok. Ambulance on scene. Please drive safe.”<\/p>\n
Local Councillor Jack White said recently that after raising the issue repeatedly, he had gotten a response from the Roads Office in Cork County Council promising that improvement works first planned in 2024 will start shortly. The delay has partly been down to a much larger project in the area, a major solar farm development.<\/p>\n
Posting to social media, Cllr White said: “As previously outlined, there is an important external dependency affecting the timeline for Cork County Council\u2019s upgrade works. This relates to the HV cable ducting works associated with the \u00d8rsted Ballinrea Solar Farm, involving the installation of cables from the solar farm to Raffeen, which will pass through Ballinrea Cross. As a result, Cork County Council has had to delay its planned works in this area.<\/p>\n
“\u00d8rsted has now appointed its contractor and submitted road opening licence applications for works at Ballinrea Cross.<\/p>\n
These works will include:<\/p>\n
Uisce \u00c9ireann pipe replacement.HV ducting and joint bay installation.Temporary reinstatement of the road surface.<\/p>\n
Cllr White said: “Cork County Council\u2019s upgrade project at Ballinrea Junction is now anticipated to commence in July 2026. Procurement has been completed and a contractor has already been appointed. The proposed timeline also takes account of the Leaving Certificate examinations at the adjacent school.<\/p>\n
