Former Love Is Blind UK contestants Catherine Richards and Jake Singleton-Hill have raised concerns about their welfare following their appearances on the reality TV show. It comes after a BBC Panorama investigation into Married at First Sight UK saw two anonymous women claim they were raped<\/a>, while one woman accused her on-screen partner of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

The men have denied the allegations, and Channel 4’s new CEO, Priya Dogra<\/a>, has apologised to contestants of the show.<\/p>\n

CPL Productions, the UK company behind MAFS UK, also makes Love Is Blind UK, with Richards alleging that welfare workers on the latter shared confidential details about her experience with the show’s producers.<\/p>\n

Richards, who appeared on season one of the show, claimed that this was then used to create potential storylines on the show, telling Deadline<\/a> that contestants are “puppets to them”.<\/p>\n

She continued: “They say [there is] welfare, but it\u2019s not welfare. They work for production, and they need storylines.”<\/p>\n

Richards went on to say that she informed the welfare team about an argument she had with her on-screen partner, Freddie Powell, and cameras showed up shortly after. In response to her claims, Netflix and CPL said that cameras visited Richards the following day after their conversation, and only with her permission.<\/p>\n

In addition, Richards raised questions about the aftercare she received. She claimed she was able to access regular online therapy sessions provided through the show, but said they were not “deep” conversations and felt like producers were “just ticking a checklist”.<\/p>\n

Singleton-Hill, who starred alongside Richards in season one, accused the welfare team of using information as “ammunition”.<\/p>\n

He told Deadline: “They make you feel like it\u2019s a safe space, but they use it as ammunition.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s a really toxic environment\u2026 they don\u2019t have your best interests at heart, they just want to make the best dramatic show they can.”<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for CPL told Deadline<\/a> that contestants are told before filming begins that the welfare team will inform producers of issues, and added that therapy is available to all participants during production.<\/p>\n

“A strict distinction was maintained between production welfare, which escalates concerns when necessary, and fully confidential, independent psychological support,” they said.<\/p>\n

“Comprehensive safeguarding was implemented at every stage, including pre-filming background and psychological checks, daily on-set welfare monitoring, consent-led filming, and ongoing access to support both during and after broadcast.” <\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Netflix told Digital Spy: “The physical and psychological wellbeing of all contributors is paramount. We are confident that the most robust and comprehensive protocols are in place and that we act promptly and appropriately whenever concerns are raised.<\/p>\n

“On any new or returning series we constantly review and, where necessary, improve the procedures we have in place to ensure the utmost care is being taken of our contributors.”<\/p>\n
