Casualty airs the devastating death of a character, in an emotional storyline involving Cam Mickelthwaite and Indie Jankowski. In the current boxset, ‘Lethal Legacy’<\/a>, nurse Cam has been working on the corridor, and made friends with elderly patient Alan Gibson. <\/p>\n

Cam was unhappy about the way Alan and others were treated, and wanted to improve the hospital system. When Alan was discharged from hospital, Cam realised that he lived nearby, so offered help to his new friend and suggested that he could visit him regularly.<\/p>\n

Cam stuck to his promise, and in today’s episode<\/a>, he and girlfriend Indie call round to see Alan \u2013 but they unfortunately find him on the floor, having suffered a fall in this house with nobody around.<\/p>\n

They get Alan back on his feet and are keen to get him back to the ED to undergo tests, but Alan refuses, as he was scarred by one of his fellow patients dying on the corridor of the hospital recently.<\/p>\n

Once Indie leaves, Alan says that he wants to die, and asks Cam to help him end his life. Cam is upset by this admission and refuses to assist him, but he comforts the struggling Alan when he breaks down in tears.<\/p>\n

Over a cup of tea, Alan and Cam have a candid conversation, and Cam offers to spend more time with him. He appears relieved when it is seemingly enough to help Alan change his mind about his previous plans.<\/p>\n

As Cam has a difficult day at work, Indie later calls round to see Alan again<\/a>, having bought him some milk. Alan asks her to help open a bottle of medication, with the pair having an emotional conversation.<\/p>\n

Alan recalls that his wife died alone in a hospice, with roadworks meaning that he didn’t make it there in time to say goodbye. Indie, meanwhile, shares that her beloved grandmother also died alone.<\/p>\n

Indie leaves, but as she walks down the street, she has a sudden realisation that something isn’t right. She rushes back to see Alan, and finds him unresponsive, having overdosed on the medication that she unwittingly opened earlier.<\/p>\n

She goes to call an ambulance, but the dying Alan begs her not to, so she instead holds his hand while he passes away. The tearful Indie makes herself scarce afterwards, with a heartbroken Cam later arriving at Alan’s house to find him lying next to a photo of his wife. <\/p>\n

After the incredibly poignant episode, will Cam discover that Indie was present when Alan died? And how will he view his girlfriend if he discovers that she elected not to call an ambulance despite Alan’s wishes?<\/p>\n

Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.<\/p>\n
