A major Spanish airport has reopened after being closed for several weeks. The ECHO previously reported how British holidaymakers<\/a> were urged to check their travel plans as Santiago de Compostela Airport in north-west Spain closed for several weeks.<\/p>\n

During this time, from Thursday, April 23 until this week, no take-offs or landings were permitted. The shutdown formed part of a \u20ac31 million upgrade programme announced by Spanish airport operator AENA, which included major resurfacing works on the airport\u2019s main runway.<\/p>\n

While the improvements were intended to boost safety and efficiency, they required a full closure lasting just over five weeks.<\/p>\n

The disruption was expected to affect thousands of UK passengers, with airlines including Ryanair, Vueling and Iberia operating services to the airport.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, the airport has reopened this week as planned.<\/p>\n

Routes typically connect the region with major Spanish hubs such as Barcelona and Madrid, alongside UK flights. On average, around 30 UK-bound flights land at Santiago de Compostela each week.<\/p>\n

With aircraft carrying roughly 180 passengers, as many as 4,500 British holidaymakers could be impacted during the closure period.<\/p>\n
