The body of scientific evidence has shown creatine to help boost performance in adults.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This has not stopped some influencers from saying that they give their children creatine. Rhonda Patrick, Ph.D., has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVhGuoIDqXW\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVhGuoIDqXW\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"said\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> that she gives her son 2.5 grams of creatine per day for performance. \u201cThere\u2019s a lots of studies out there now in elementary school children showing that if they supplement with creatine that they can improve their [\u2026] agility and a variety of different sports performance parameters,\u201d Patrick has said.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Kathryn Lauren, a holistic wellness influencer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMforyrMpNu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMforyrMpNu\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"said\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> that she gives her kids creatine because \u201cit has been shown in research studies to enhance physical development as well as muscular strength. However it\u2019s also been shown to enhance cognition, learning, and memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Except when you investigate these claims, the evidence behind them is shaky, at best.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Which isn\u2019t great, because according to a 2026 <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1047279726001055?dgcid=author\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1047279726001055?dgcid=author\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">study<\/a> in the Annals of Epidemiology more and more kids are taking creatine\u2014and boys especially.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When I asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a40449680\/dietitian-vs-nutritionist\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a40449680\/dietitian-vs-nutritionist\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dietitians\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dietitians<\/a> and pediatric health experts if giving kids creatine is effective or safe, they had serious concerns. So before you consider scooping the supplement for your own kids, there are a few important things you should know.<\/p>\n<p>Is Creatine Effective in Kids?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">MAN, WE HAVE absolutely no idea.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When influencers do mention research, they seem to cite two pieces of literature: a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/c2a0\/4c8d707c25975fb3729d2cf10a85fe6be2f0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/c2a0\/4c8d707c25975fb3729d2cf10a85fe6be2f0.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"review\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">review<\/a> in the journal Nutrients and a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2025.1578564\/full\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2025.1578564\/full\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"opinion article\" data-node-id=\"10.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opinion article<\/a> featured in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That 2021 review assessed nine studies from 1999 to 2017, all of which had sample sizes of 20 or fewer adolescent athletes. The <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=mens+health+creatine+dosage&amp;ia=web\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=mens+health+creatine+dosage&amp;ia=web\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dosages of creatine monohydrate\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">dosages of creatine monohydrate<\/a> largely focused on higher amounts (20 or 25 grams) for short durations (four to nine days).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While many of these studies did report improvements in athleticism\u2014&#8221;sprint swimming performance,\u201d \u201cdynamic strength\u201d\u2014they were really small studies.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Even the researchers hit on this in their conclusion: \u201ca dire need exists for prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials examining the safety and efficacy of creatine among children and adolescent populations; both among athletes and the general population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And the 2025 opinion article is just that: an opinion; not a study. The research cited on childhood and adolescent creatine supplementation within that piece is \u2026 the 2021 Nutrients review.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To summarize all this: \u201cWe don&#8217;t know the long-term effects because the studies on kids and creatine are small and short,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/abbylangernutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/abbylangernutrition.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Abby Langer, RD\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Abby Langer, RD<\/a>, a Men\u2019s Health Nutrition Advisor. \u201cThere&#8217;s just not enough data to show efficacy and rationale for its use in that population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">This extends to the supposed brain health benefits of creatine supplements in children\u2014of which there\u2019s been little to no research. Yes, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64874952\/creatine-brain-health-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a64874952\/creatine-brain-health-intelligence\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"emerging and promising research\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">emerging and promising research<\/a> into adults on creatine as it relates to cognitive function, but, again, emphasis on adults.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And, not for nothing, you have to consider funding and potential conflicts of interest in the existing scientific research. The 2021 review was funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzchem.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.alzchem.com\/en\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Alzchem\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzchem<\/a>, a company that owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzchem.com\/en\/brands\/creapure\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.alzchem.com\/en\/brands\/creapure\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Creapure\" data-node-id=\"17.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Creapure<\/a>, a brand of creatine. The 2025 opinion article was funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/lab\/DBSS-Research-Division-Diego-A-Bonilla\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/lab\/DBSS-Research-Division-Diego-A-Bonilla\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"DBSS Research Division\" data-node-id=\"17.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DBSS Research Division<\/a>, which has connections to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kreafood_\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kreafood_\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"KreaFood\" data-node-id=\"17.7\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">KreaFood<\/a>, a company with creatine-fortified products.<\/p>\n<p>Is Creatine Safe for Kids?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">IT DEPENDS HOW you define \u201csafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Physiologically, what little research exists does indicate that adolescents who take creatine don\u2019t experience kidney, liver, or heart issues.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Just this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC13158627\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC13158627\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"researchers\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">researchers<\/a> (who reported no funding or conflicts of interest) assessed a handful of studies on creatine supplementation and health issues in kids. They found that \u201cno consistent short-term safety signals were identified in renal, hepatic, hematologic, or cardiometabolic outcomes within the studied durations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That said, they also mentioned this: \u201cThese findings should be interpreted cautiously given the small number of studies, heterogeneity of included populations, limited long-term data, and methodological constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So basically, what that 2021 Nutrients review reported: All this is too new and we need much, much more research.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThere is not currently high-quality evidence to conclude that creatine supplementation is clearly safe or effective for children and adolescents,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/nagatalab.ucsf.edu\/content\/jason-nagata-md\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nagatalab.ucsf.edu\/content\/jason-nagata-md\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Jason Nagata, MD\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Jason Nagata, MD<\/a>, an associate professor of pediatrics in the Diving of Adolescent &amp; Youth Adult Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Plus, supplements in general, are a risky business.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cDietary supplements in the U.S. are not tightly regulated, so products may contain contaminants, inaccurate ingredient labeling, or additional substances not listed on the package,\u201d says Dr. Nagata.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And then there\u2019s the psychological side of things.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe use of legal performance-enhancing supplements may normalize a broader culture of performance enhancement among adolescents,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Dr. Nagata\u2019s <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7235901\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7235901\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">research<\/a> has found that creatine use (and the use of other legal supplements) can precede or increase openness to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a61941240\/trenbolone-steroid-trend\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a61941240\/trenbolone-steroid-trend\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"anabolic-androgenic steroid use\" data-node-id=\"29.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">anabolic-androgenic steroid use<\/a> later in life.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Finally, there\u2019s the issue of mental health: \u201cIn adolescent boys, supplement use can become tied to body dissatisfaction, pressure to gain muscle quickly, and <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=mens+health+generation+flex&amp;ia=web\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?q=mens+health+generation+flex&amp;ia=web\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle dysmorphia\" data-node-id=\"30.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">muscle dysmorphia<\/a>,\u201d says Dr. Nagata.<\/p>\n<p>Should Kids Take Creatine?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">NO.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe general consensus remains that it&#8217;s unnecessary for young athletes who haven&#8217;t maximized their foundational habits. They get far greater returns from focusing on adequate protein, sleep, and consistent training,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.precisionnutrition.com\/author\/brian-st-pierre\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.precisionnutrition.com\/author\/brian-st-pierre\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Brian St. Pierre, RD, CSCS\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Brian St. Pierre, RD, CSCS<\/a>, a Men\u2019s Health Nutrition Advisor. \u201cThe lack of long-term data in that specific cohort keeps me cautious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Caution also seems to be the approach of the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American Academy of Pediatrics\" data-node-id=\"34.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The AAP, too, has conducted <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/138\/1\/e20161300\/52580\/Use-of-Performance-Enhancing-Substances?guestAccessKey=\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/138\/1\/e20161300\/52580\/Use-of-Performance-Enhancing-Substances?guestAccessKey=\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"35.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">research<\/a> about the link between supplement intake in adolescents and the use of performance enhancing drugs later life. They\u2019ve also issued cautionary <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/globalassets\/publications\/coya\/performance_enhancement_final_secured.1.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/globalassets\/publications\/coya\/performance_enhancement_final_secured.1.0.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"guidance\" data-node-id=\"35.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">guidance<\/a> on performance-enhancing supplements, including creatine.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIt is important to keep in mind that the biggest factor affecting athletic performance in young athletes is maturation and skill development,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/facultyprofiles.tufts.edu\/michele-labotz\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/facultyprofiles.tufts.edu\/michele-labotz\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Michele Labotz, MD,\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Michele Labotz, MD,<\/a> associate professor in the department of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine, speaking on behalf of the AAP.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Langer sums it up this way: \u201cI honestly struggle to think of any situation where I&#8217;d recommend creatine supplementation to a child. There&#8217;s a common perception among adults that we can out-supplement a bad diet; we shouldn&#8217;t be giving that messaging to our kids.
