\n\tTom Holland<\/a> revealed to GQ magazine<\/a> as part of the publication\u2019s summer cover story for \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>\u201d that he had an \u201cuncomfortable conversation\u201d with Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman about delaying the production of \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a>\u201d so that he could film Christopher Nolan<\/a>\u2018s epic instead. When Nolan first offered him the role of Odysseus\u2019 son Telemachus, both movies had identical production start dates. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I said to Chris, like, \u2018Look, I want to do this movie, but if I\u2019m going to do it, I\u2019m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,\u2019\u2009\u201d Holland remembered, noting that Sony agreed to push the new \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movie out of respect for both himself and for Nolan.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of, \u2018This movie isn\u2019t going to go five months over, and we aren\u2019t actually going to lose Tom for two years,\u2019\u201d Holland said, nodding to how \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d started on schedule and finished nine days early. \u201cAny other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHolland told GQ<\/a> that was even beneficial for \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d to delay \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d as it opened the door for the Marvel movie to hire \u201cShang-Chi\u201d helmer Destin Daniel Cretton as director.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2019The Odyssey\u2019\u00a0almost saved\u00a0\u2018Spider-Man\u2019\u00a0because we wouldn\u2019t have had Destin,\u201d Holland said. \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn\u2019t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now. And I truly believe that we\u2019ve made the best version of any\u00a0\u2018Spider-Man\u2019\u00a0movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they\u2019re very grateful that it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWatching Nolan at work also encouraged Holland to speak up about how his Marvel production should run.<\/p>\n

\n\tHolland said this allowed him to \u201clay down the law\u201d on the \u201cSpider-Man\u201d set \u201cand say, \u2018We are not going to come to set and figure it out. We need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Spider-Man\u00a04\u2019 and they make loads of money and we\u2019re going to just have a big summer. Why are we making this movie?\u2019 And Destin was super instrumental in that, but it was just really great to constantly be calling up the studio and [producers] Amy [Pascal] and Rachel [O\u2019Connor], who I love, and be like, \u2018Well, Chris is doing it this way. This is how I think we should be doing it.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite spacing out the productions, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d and \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d are now gearing up for back-to-back summer theatrical releases. Nolan\u2019s film opens July 17, followed by the comic book movie on July 31.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt feels like the beginning of the next chapter of my life,\u201d Holland said about both movies coming out. \u201cI really feel like a young man now. I have so much amazing stuff happening in my personal life to take me through to the rest of my life, and I feel like I have a new perspective on where I want to exist in Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n
