A motorist in a stolen car was quizzed by garda\u00ed about a knuckleduster found in the vehicle and he replied: \u201cIt\u2019s dangerous out there\u201d.<\/p>\n
Judge Catherine Ryan said at Cork District Court: \u201cThere is no reason anyone should ever have a knuckleduster in their possession.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Christopher Nagle of 7 Riverview Estate, Tower, Blarney, County Cork, pleaded guilty to being in possession of the weapon and driving while uninsured and disqualified from driving, as well as driving a stolen car.<\/p>\n
Judge Ryan said: \u201cIt is a seriously reckless act to drive while disqualified putting yourself and other road users at risk.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The judge imposed sentences totalling four months on the 33-year-old.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Gear\u00f3id Davis outlined the background to the case: \u201cGarda\u00ed were conducting a checkpoint when a car with extensive damage to windscreen and windows approached the checkpoint.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter carrying out enquiries, garda\u00ed discovered that the registration number did not match the make and model of the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe driver, Christopher Nagle, claimed not to have driving license on him. Garda\u00ed established that Mr Nagle was a disqualified driver.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn further inspection of the vehicle garda\u00ed observed that the NCT, motor tax and insurance discs (did not match the car).\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Further enquiries confirmed that the vehicle was subject to unauthorised taking in Cork city.<\/p>\n
After being cautioned, Mr Nagle stated that he brought the car having seen a Facebook Marketplace ad but did not have any contact details for the seller or any proof of purchase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He claimed that he paid \u20ac5,000 for it and that he had a knuckleduster with him because, ‘it is dangerous out there”.<\/p>\n
Christopher Nagle made certain admissions in respect of the offences and ultimately pleaded guilty at Cork District Court.<\/p>\n
Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said that the explanation initially given by the accused did not stand up to scrutiny.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said that a period already spent in custody had been positive for the accused in recovering from substance difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\n
