Dublin backroom team assistant Niall Moyna believes that comments made by GAA President Jarlath Burns about the Ger Brennan-Jim McGuinness controversy were “disingenuous”.

Dublin manager Brennan received a 12-week ban after getting sent off for an altercation with Galway’s S&C coach Cian Breathnach McGinn in their league meeting in March.

That sanction came under rule 7.2(c) concerning “physical interference with a team official”.

Dublin appealed the ban but were unsuccessful and the suspension will finish at midnight on Saturday 13 June.

The story received more attention when Donegal boss McGuinness escaped any sanction for appearing to shove Kerry player Diarmuid O’Connor at half-time of their All-Ireland qualifier last Saturday week after it was deemed that the referee dealt sufficiently with the matter on the day.

Speaking on yesterday’s Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1, Burns said it was irrational to directly compare the two incidents, and stressed that the Central Competition Controls Committee [CCCC] was not there to “re-referee” games.

Dublin declined to speak to media following last Sunday’s All-Ireland Round 1 qualifier loss to Louth but Moyna, a member of Dublin’s backroom team, was asked about their response to Burns’ comments.

He told Morning Ireland: “Look, we were very disappointed with Jarlath’s comments, very disappointed.

“It seems to be a selective application of the rules, is there a rule book for Dublin and then a rule book for everyone else?

“That’s the way we’re perceiving it at the moment.

“Look, we have known in the past that the CCCC have looked at evidence post-fact and have clearly taken people before the committee afterward and suspensions were issued so I think it was very disingenuous.

“This is not about Donegal, this is about Ger and the suspension was penal in the first place.

“But then I just think that was pouring coal on the fire with his comments yesterday.

“And look, we’re disappointed with the comments.”

If Dublin’s match against Cavan is fixed for Sunday week, Brennan can return to his duties. The details of the fixtures are due to be confirmed today.

“To put the record straight, the individual that Ger was involved with was not part of the backroom staff,” said Moyna.

“He wasn’t on the official list provided by the Galway County Board on the day of the game, he was just any other individual in on the field.

“So I think that needs to be made public.

“If the game’s on Sunday, he will be available to officiate at that.

“People don’t realise Ger has not been able to coach his kids’ Go Games on a Saturday morning. The suspension applies to all involvement in the GAA.

“I think they really need to look at that rule.”
