{"id":481206,"date":"2026-06-03T16:20:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T16:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/481206\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T16:20:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T16:20:13","slug":"have-your-say-should-students-with-dyslexia-get-extra-points-in-exams-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/481206\/","title":{"rendered":"Have your say: should students with dyslexia get extra points in exams? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Today is D-Day for more than 140,000 Leaving and Junior Certificate students as they sit the first exams of the 2026 exam season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While nerves are high for students, parents and even teachers, one topic has started a debate among Irish Times readers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday, we published a story about how one mother of a Leaving Cert student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2026\/06\/02\/dyslexic-students-should-get-extra-points-for-the-disadvantage-they-face-mother-of-lc-pupil-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2026\/06\/02\/dyslexic-students-should-get-extra-points-for-the-disadvantage-they-face-mother-of-lc-pupil-says\/\">thought those with dyslexia should get more points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Anita Reid Murphy said her daughter, Caoimhe (18), would walk into her first exam not only stressed about what might come up, but also about how she would answer the questions in the time allowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Roughly a quarter of these students, or 30,000, will receive an accommodation in the exams through the Reasonable Accommodations at Certificate Examinations (Race) scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The arrangement is designed to help students with special educational needs who have difficulty in communicating what they know to an examiner because of a physical, visual, hearing and\/or learning difficulty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of these accommodations can include reading assistance, scribes, voice-activated computers and being able to take the exam in a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The scheme is under review by the State Examinations Commission and at the start of 2026 a pilot measure was introduced giving Race students an extra 10 minutes in each exam. This is a provisional measure that will be reviewed before the 2027 exams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Murphy said the 10 minutes was \u201cfrankly insulting\u201d to students such as Caoimhe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">What do you think about this?
