\n\tMarc Maron<\/a> plays a great actor in \u201cIn Memoriam,\u201d but the comedian and podcaster worried he didn\u2019t have the chops to pull off a key moment in the new movie.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had to cry, but I didn\u2019t know if I had that kind of control as an actor \u2014 I didn\u2019t know if I can do that,\u201d Maron remembers. \u201cI really freaked out. I went back to my trailer and was full on DiCaprio in \u2018Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018I suck. What am I doing here?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt fell to Sharon Stone<\/a>, Maron\u2019s scene partner, to help him find his way through the emotional gauntlet. When Maron came back to set, Stone grabbed his hand and encouraged him to draw on the grief he feels over the 2020 death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhy don\u2019t you do the scene to Lynn, and I\u2019ll make sure she\u2019s here,\u201d Stone told Maron. <\/p>\n

\n\tIt worked. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSharon\u2019s kind of a mystical being,\u201d Maron says. \u201cShe\u2019s a powerful force. She said that, and it brought me to a space where I realized that Lynn was my biggest champion as an actor. She loved to direct me. I don\u2019t know that I would have continued pursuing acting if it weren\u2019t for her. So by doing it for Lynn, I got to that place emotionally that I think lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn Memoriam\u201d debuts at this year\u2019s Tribeca Festival<\/a>, and Stone is thrilled with the experience of working with Maron, whom she first met during a 2018 interview for his podcast \u201cWTF With Marc Maron.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe genuinely partnered in a very profound way on the scene,\u201d Stone says. \u201cIn my career, I\u2019ve been put up against the big dogs. They would always bring me in to put me up against the biggest, toughest guys, and oftentimes guys who were kind of a handful, but they knew that I could take it. But it was so different to work with someone like Marc, who was so open and so honest in their real feelings and emotions, and so available to be sincere with me. He was available to be my true partner, not my adversary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the film, Stone plays Maron\u2019s ex-wife, a fellow actor whom he met on a film set. Both have terminal illnesses, and their diagnosis has left them reassessing their lives and work in different ways. Maron\u2019s character is obsessed with making it into the Oscars \u201cin memoriam\u201d segment; Stone\u2019s is more reflective and resigned. Their tender encounter takes place in a grand setting with Stone resting in a chaise lounge in her mansion, outfitted in a robe and turban, looking like Norma Desmond.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a fulcrum point in the movie, because I have to take this moment to snap Marc out of this place he\u2019s in, where he\u2019s not living in reality,\u201d Stone says. <\/p>\n

\n\tStone formed a bond with Maron during her spot on \u201cWTF\u201d and kept in touch with him over the years. She wrote him a condolence note when Shelton died of an undiagnosed blood disorder, which touched Maron greatly.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was a terrible tragedy,\u201d Stone says. \u201cHe lost her so early, and she was so important to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEven though their scene was complicated to navigate, Stone is thrilled with the finished film.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarc is remarkable,\u201d she says. \u201cHe\u2019s a real contender in this movie. I was completely blown away. Rarely do I see films that are this amazing anymore, that are about the human condition, and are so brilliant and so beautifully made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGoing forward, Stone, who has shown she can nail a punchline in films like \u201cThe Muse,\u201d hopes to do more comedy. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how many more villains I can really spit out,\u201d she says. \u201cI want to go back to my roots\u2026I started in improv, and I did comedies like \u2018Irreconcilable Differences.\u2019 Being a comedic actress was my bag, and then I did \u2018Basic Instinct,\u2019 and everybody forgot I could be funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJust don\u2019t expect Stone to dust off her ice pick any time soon. She makes it clear she won\u2019t be reprising her role as femme fatale Catherine Tramell in the reboot of \u201cBasic Instinct\u201d that Joe Eszterhas is reportedly writing for Amazon MGM Studios. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow old is Joe Eszterhas?\u201d Stone asks as she Googles the screenwriter\u2019s age. \u201cOh, he\u2019s 81.
