Charli XCX<\/a> has spoken about uniting \u201cthree legends\u201d on the official cover artwork for her upcoming album \u2018Music, Fashion Film\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The follow-up to the cultural phenomenon<\/a> that was 2024\u2019s \u2018Brat\u2019<\/a> is due for release on July 24, and will feature the recent singles \u2018Rock Music\u2019<\/a> and \u2018SS26\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, the pop star has discussed using a black-and-white photograph capturing musician and composer John Cale<\/a>, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, and legendary director Martin Scorsese for the front cover.<\/p>\n

The already-iconic image was shot by Scottish photographer and filmmaker Aidan Zamiri, who has helmed some of Charli\u2019s recent music videos, and directed and co-wrote her A24 mockumentary The Moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cale, Jacobs and Scorsese came together to represent each of the mediums in the title of \u2018Music, Fashion, Film\u2019.<\/p>\n

During a new interview with Shaad Magazine<\/a>, Charli was asked about the story behind what the outlet described as \u201cthe album\u2019s totally unreal cover art\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been so excited to share that image, just because the day that we shot it, which was in April in New York, was such a special day,\u201d she recalled. \u201cTo have Aidan shoot it, and also all of my team, who are all my best friends-and childhood best friends in some cases-to have them all there, it just felt really like\u2026 you know how people use the term \u2018shook\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer continued: \u201cI never really have felt genuinely shook before, I think. And once we finished that shoot, me and Aidan were just.. it was like this out-of-body experience, and I turned to him and I was like, \u2018I think this is what shook means\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to have these three legends in this room being willing to come together for this album cover, to be shot by somebody who is an up and coming filmmaker and photographer \u2013 who they don\u2019t particularly know very well \u2013 but were willing to trust, for them to trust me, it was really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charli added: \u201cObviously the three people who are on the cover have had very different careers, but they\u2019re very impactful people in my life. To have them all being in a room together, it just felt quite magical, and not something that I think I\u2019ll ever really experience again. So I was just really happy to share that with people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went on to say that the \u201cfun thing\u201d about the \u2018Music, Fashion, Film\u2019 cover and title was that \u201ceverybody has their own opinions on who their trifecta of those people are \u2013 the people who represent those three pillars of the arts\u201d. It comes after fans have been sharing their own, alternate versions of the artwork online.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s kind of fun seeing everybody else\u2019s interpretations of that, and of course there are so many versions of that for me too,\u201d Charli explained. \u201cSo I just feel really happy to have shared it with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charli said there\u2019d been \u201ca lot of discussion\u201d around who should\u2019ve ended up on the final cover, but she ultimately landed on figures who she had \u201cpersonal connections with\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously I\u2019ve spoken so much about the Velvet Underground<\/a>, I\u2019ve collaborated with John [on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack<\/a>], I\u2019ve been a fan of John\u2019s solo work, his work with the Velvets,\u201d she shared, calling Cale \u201cprolific\u201d.<\/p>\n

As for Jacobs, Charli said: \u201cHe was the first person who ever gave me a fashion campaign. He was the first person who opened me up to that world in a way. I\u2019ve done three campaigns for Marc, and I think he\u2019s always been able to really like communicate youth culture through his work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking about Scorsese, she explained: \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky enough to be able to sit down and have a few conversations with him about film [\u2026] I mean he doesn\u2019t really need an explanation, he\u2019s fucking Martin Scorsese, and the fact that he wanted to do this, again, it\u2019s just\u2026 I felt really honoured.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Charli revealed that the album title \u201ccame really, really early, right on top of making the first idea for the record\u201d. She said: \u201cIt kind of suggests something cheeky in a way. It\u2019s also about ambition and scale and glamour, but at the same time it\u2019s also very, very real and personal and made by real people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pop artist concluded the chat with some final thoughts about her experience on set with Cale, Jacobs and Scorsese. \u201c[I thought],\u00a0\u2018Wow, we\u2019re probably never going to be in the room with those three people at the same time ever again\u2019, and thinking about how fortunate we are that that got to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charli told the outlet that she felt the trio \u201cconnected\u201d to the music, and remembered the \u201cindescribable feeling to be shooting in there\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it was fun, because it was quick and easy, and it felt effortless,\u201d she added.\u201d They all got the vibe, you know, like Marc came dressed so cute and ready to go. It was just a really warm, sweet thing, and once in a lifetime. Words can\u2019t describe how I feel about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer has released two B-sides from the \u2018Music, Fashion, Film\u2019 era recently: \u2018I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day And Night\u2019<\/a> and \u2018Playboy Bunny\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Charli\u2019s latest material sees her move away from the club vibe of \u2018Brat\u2019 \u2013 NME\u2018s Number One album of the year in 2024<\/a> \u2013 in favour of a grittier, more guitar-orientated sound. However, she clarified last month: \u201cI never said I was making a rock album.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

She has since responded to the reactions to her stylistic shift<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s all kind of fascinating,\u201d she explained. \u201cI love talking about music and art with my friends, so I\u2019m happy people are throwing out thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

This summer will see Charli headline\u00a0Reading & Leeds 2026<\/a>\u00a0alongside\u00a0Fontaines D.C.<\/a>,\u00a0Florence + The Machine<\/a>,\u00a0Dave<\/a>\u00a0and more.<\/p>\n
