Through the afternoon and evening, rain will spread from the southwest as light to moderate southerly winds become southeasterly and increase moderate to fresh and gusty, stronger along southern coasts. Highest temperatures of 13-16C.

IRELAND’S QUALIFYING FATE STILL IN THEIR OWN HANDS

Carla Ward’s Republic of Ireland side welcome the Netherlands to Super Valu Páirc Uí Chaoimh knowing that a win would see them overtake the Dutch and keep their hopes of direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup alive.

Back-to-back wins over Poland in April leave Ireland two points behind the Netherlands and a point behind France as they prepare to play both sides over the next few days.

A win against the Dutch in Cork, followed by victory over France at the Stade des Alpes on Tuesday would see the Girls in Green stamp their ticket for Brazil.

Ireland were narrowly edged out when they met the Netherlands in March with Lineth Beerensteyn’s late goal giving the hosts all three points after a second-half penalty from Katie McCabe looked to have given Ireland a valuable point.

The Dutch were the better team for the majority of the game but Ireland will have felt that they conceded two soft goals.

Ward’s side look to be in a much better place after their two victories over Poland and the Irish boss will be targeting a win to take their qualification hopes to the final day.

She has selection issues however with Denise O’Sullivan and forward Emily Murphy both ruled out of the game through suspension, due to an accumulation of yellow cards. The duo remain in camp and will be available for next week’s game with France.

Ireland beat France at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 2024

WARD WANTS THE CROWD TO PLAY THEIR PART

With a large and vocal crowd expected at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Ward is hoping that they will give Ireland an edge at a ground where her side have a 100% record.

This will be the third senior women’s international played at the venue and the Irish boss will be hoping that they can extend their winning run after 2024’s 3-1 victory over France and last year’s 1-0 win against Slovenia.

Ward wants to make the game uncomfortable for the visitors and has called on the crowd to create a hostile atmosphere.

She said: “Historically, no-one has wanted to play against Ireland, because as a nation, it is a determination. I think Ireland have always been difficult to beat.

“Now I think there’s an element of maybe ‘difficult to play against’. I think we’ve shown a different side of our game, where we can go and try and win games now. I think that there will be that.

“I think everyone loves being down here. I think the people of Cork make an awful lot of noise. We heard that last year. If we can get those numbers up in the next couple of days, I think it’s going to be an unbelievable occasion.

“I’m really big on belief and confidence. You have to have an attitude and a mindset that you can compete against anybody. This will be no different.

“We’re inviting one of the best teams in the world with world class players and you know it’s an honour to be playing against those types of teams so we’ll embrace it and hopefully we can do what we need to do.”

Lineth Beerensteyn scores against Ireland

NETHERLANDS LOOK TO SET UP FINAL DAY DECIDER

The Dutch are in a great position heading into the final two games. They sit atop the group on eight points and have already played France twice.

They round off their campaign with the trip to Cork before they host bottom side Poland on the final day and they go into the last two games as favourites to finish top and claim the automatic qualification place.

A win over Ireland would end the Girls in Green’s hopes of finishing top, but while the Dutch are going into the game full of confidence, their manager Arjan Veurink is taking nothing for granted.

“There are no small countries left, certainly not in Europe,” he said. “I think that is a wonderful sign. If you look at how women’s football is developing, it means that we have to do the same. There are no easy matches anymore.

“We have put ourselves in the best possible starting position, but at the same time, we have achieved nothing yet.

“I am not looking ahead at the moment. We are focusing on executing a good gameplan, if we use the quality we have, and we have every confidence that we can win the match against Ireland.

“We expect the Irish to let us make the play, and hopefully we will be able to force the Irish back. That demands more from us on the ball.”

Veurink has some big selection calls to make however, as the Dutch will be without Manchester City star Vivianne Miedema, Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar and FC Twente’s Jill Roord.

IRELAND SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Courtney Brosnan (Everton FC), Sophie Whitehouse (Charlton Athletic), Grace Moloney (Sunderland).

Defenders: Katie McCabe (Chelsea FC), Anna Patten (Aston Villa FC), Caitlin Hayes (Brighton & Hove Albion), Hayley Nolan (Crystal Palace), Aoife Mannion (Newcastle United), Jessie Stapleton (West Ham United), Chloe Mustaki (Nottingham Forest).

Midfielders: Tyler Toland (Durham), Megan Connolly (Lazio), Marissa Sheva (Sunderland), Lucy Quinn (Birmingham City), Ruesha Littlejohn (Crystal Palace), Jamie Finn (Sunderland), Aoibheann Clancy (Shelbourne), Jess Ziu (West Ham United).

Attackers: Saoirse Noonan (Celtic FC), Abbie Larkin (Crystal Palace), Leanne Kiernan (Liverpool), Kyra Carusa (Kansas City Current – loan), Amber Barrett (Strasbourg).

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER Republic of Ireland v Netherlands, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork, 7:30pm TV Live coverage on RTÉ…

[2
61,60,43
post-483419","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
