data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">becoming long-term investors<\/a> as Beijing works to build up sovereign technologies.At a recent meeting, the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/state-owned-assets-supervision-and-administration-commission-china?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission<\/a> (SASAC) also urged centrally administered SOEs to become \u201cglobally influential sources\u201d of original technologies across 10 strategic sectors, including next-generation power systems, People\u2019s Daily reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The regulator also mapped out an even grander goal for 2035, when central SOEs are expected to mature into a dominant pillar of the nation\u2019s basic research system, and further improve their standing by becoming \u201cglobally influential\u201d technological sources in 20 cutting-edge fields.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">With China\u2019s private sector highly visible in downstream commercial innovations like consumer artificial intelligence, Beijing has now mandated a concerted push for major SOEs to scale up their original scientific output.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">To encourage more ambitious scientific inquiry, Beijing is revamping its methods of assessment and evaluation for executives of these companies.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The regulator pledged to optimise its performance review system for executives, with the introduction of an application process that could shield them from blame for balance-sheet losses incurred in the pursuit of basic research.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">For national-level laboratories and joint-innovation
