{"id":484084,"date":"2026-06-05T06:47:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T06:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/484084\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T06:47:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T06:47:09","slug":"martin-refers-to-himself-as-ultimate-diplomat-by-swerving-parrott-heroics-with-hungarian-pm-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/484084\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin refers to himself as \u2018ultimate diplomat\u2019 by swerving Parrott heroics with Hungarian PM \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin <\/a>said he was \u201cthe ultimate diplomat\u201d by not raising Troy Parrott\u2019s heroics with the new Hungarian prime minister during their meeting in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Martin discussed the priorities of the State\u2019s EU presidency and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East during a meeting with P\u00e9ter Magyar on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was the ultimate diplomat,\u201d said Martin, when asked whether the two discussed the November game between Hungary and Ireland in which Parrott scored a hat-trick that crushed Hungary\u2019s 2026 World Cup dreams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Taoiseach is the first leader to visit Hungary since Magyar\u2019s landslide election victory in April that ended nationalist prime minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s 16-year reign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Martin and Magyar both highlighted the similarities in their countries\u2019 history. \u201cIt is clear that Irish and Hungarian people have shared a remarkable resilience &#8230; that provided a strong foundation for the good relations we enjoy today, culturally and economically,\u201d said Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Magyar praised the Republic\u2019s \u201cpragmatic and balanced approach\u201d and welcomed the priorities of the Irish EU presidency, offering support for Irish plans to boost competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Martin said that the State, as president of the Council of the European Union, will work to \u201csecure a step change in Europe\u2019s economic performance through simplifying rules, deepening the single market, building our trade connections, reducing energy costs, and driving the AI [artificial intelligence] transformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commenting on the recent United Nations report that cited the Republic\u2019s data centre strain as a \u201ccautionary\u201d tale, Martin said his Government understands the issues and would examine the report. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDigitalisation, technological advances are happening, whether we like it or not. AI is happening. It will have increased energy demands,\u201d said Martin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOn the other side, we\u2019re pushing and driving forward the renewable story in Ireland, with particularly both onshore wind and offshore wind and then solar as well.
