Robbie Henshaw and Josh van der Flier will both be 34.

Bundee Aki (l) will be 37-years-old at the next World Cup

Some of those players may continue their careers beyond 2027, but it’s unlikely they will be around for the 2031 tournament in the United States. As such, the next World Cup cycle will see the Ireland head coach aiming to build a new team and a new legacy.

It would have been perfectly understandable for Farrell to hedge his bets and sign on for another two years to 2029, by which point he could have sensed the direction of travel his team was taking, and made a call then.

By committing for the full four years to 2031, it’s a vote of confidence by Farrell that Irish rugby’s next generation can reach the same heights as his team from the early 2020s, and a vote of confidence by the IRFU that their head coach can guide them to long-term success.

We won’t hear from him for a few more weeks, as Ireland travel Down Under for games against Australia, Japan and New Zealand, and going for silverware in the new Nations Championship later this year.

The third of those games, against the All Blacks in Auckland, will have been circled in the calendar for some time.

Four years ago, Ireland started building towards the World Cup with a series win in New Zealand. If they can end the All Blacks’ 32-year unbeaten run at Eden Park next month, it could put wind in their sails.

There’s no doubt that the Six Nations campaign this year energised him for more.

<img decoding="async" alt="26 July 2025; British & Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell after the second test match between Australia and the British & Irish Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. He publicly called out his team for their lack of “fight and intent” at Stade de France, and those words got the desired response.

Two weeks later they had a record 42-21 win away to England, and they saved their best performance of the championship for last, hammering Scotland 43-21.

Even after 10 years with the Ireland squad, his management style is showing no signs of going stale.

For sure, there are challenges ahead; his decision to fast-track Sam Prendergast into Test rugby has been a divisive one across the country, and the next year will be crucial as he settles on a preferred 10 to lead Ireland to the World Cup.

Given how he spoke at the end of the Six Nations, one would imagine he is frustrated by James Lowe’s expected departure a year out from a World Cup. Barring retirements, the winger will be the first frontline Ireland international to leave the Irish system since Farrell’s appointment as head coach.

Given how popular he was as Lions head coach last summer, it seems logical that the Ireland boss will have first dibs on continuing in that role in 2029 when they tour New Zealand, and the IRFU’s cooperation with that will likely have had an impact in his decision to renew his contract until 2031.

There was a school of thought that after more than a decade in Irish rugby, Farrell would tie a ribbon around his tenure and move on to a new challenge.

In many ways, continuing in the job for four more years and overseeing a major changing of the guard, is just that.

Listen to the RTÉ Rugby podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts, and email us at sportpodcasts@rte.ie

Follow a live blog of Leinster v Stormers (Saturday, 5.30pm) on RTÉ.ie/sport and RTÉ News app, and listen to live commentary on RTÉ Radio 1’s Saturday Sport.

Andy Farrell’s new four-year contract, which will keep the Ireland head coach in charge for a third Rugby…

[2
61,60,43
post-484925","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
