June 5 (Reuters) – Meta is considering raising tens of billions of dollars in a stock offering as it \u200cseeks new sources of capital to fund the company’s AI \u200cambitions, the Financial Times reported on Friday.<\/p>\n
The report comes after Alphabet moved to \u200braise $84.75 billion in upsized equity offerings, as Big Tech competes to build data centers and capitalize on growing demand for AI.<\/p>\n
Meta executives have been exploring “creative” ways to raise cash as it prepares \u200cto sharply boost its \u2060AI-related expenses, the FT report said, citing three people familiar with the plans.<\/p>\n
After the success of Alphabet’s \u2060equity raising this week, the discussions have intensified, as per the report.<\/p>\n
Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Shares \u200bof the \u200bsocial media company were down \u200b6.6% following the report.<\/p>\n
The \u200cworld’s largest tech companies are increasingly turning to debt and equity markets to fund AI infrastructure investments, marking a shift from their longstanding practice of funding investments largely with cash.<\/p>\n
Meta in October filed for its largest bond offering ever of up to $30 billion \u200cand also struck a $27 billion financing \u200bdeal with Blue Owl Capital .<\/p>\n
In April, \u200bthe Facebook and Instagram \u200bparent raised its annual capital spending forecast to \u200cbetween $125 billion and $145 billion.<\/p>\n
The company has \u200bnot yet hired \u200bbanks and ultimately may not issue new stock, according to the FT report, which added that it was “premature” to \u200bsay that the \u200ccompany had decided what to do and all financing options \u200bremain on the table.<\/p>\n
