Tottenham have already made their first move in the summer transfer window following confirmation of Andy Robertson’s arrival<\/a>. And maintaining the free agent approach, Spurs’ next piece of business<\/a> must be securing Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi after the defender announced his departure from the Vitality Stadium.<\/p>\n

Among the Premier League<\/a>‘s most impressive central defenders in recent seasons, the recently turned 29-year -old represents, quite simply, too good an opportunity to let slip. Roberto De Zerbi<\/a>‘s overriding priority this summer has to be shoring up a backline that conceded 57 Premier League goals this campaign and Senesi offers too much promise to overlook.<\/p>\n

Lionel Scaloni has, somewhat surprisingly, opted to leave the soon-to-be ex-Cherries star out of his World Cup 2026 squad. This simplifies matters from a Spurs standpoint in that there need be no hold-up in opening discussions with the player and his representatives.<\/p>\n

However, that also carries the additional danger that if Tottenham<\/a> don’t act swiftly and decisively, a rival club could pounce. All the more justification for making him the club’s top priority as their next signing.<\/p>\n

Micky van de Ven’s future remains a topic of debate<\/a> amid growing interest in his services. That concern has been partially eased following the club’s top-flight survival, but other considerations mean reinforcements at centre-back are still required.<\/p>\n

Captain Cristian Romero continues to attract speculation<\/a> regarding a departure from north London once the World Cup concludes. There is also the matter of Luka Vukskovic to address following the youngster’s impressive loan spell at Hamburg, though he is similarly being linked with a significant transfer elsewhere.<\/p>\n

It is yet to be determined whether Ben Davies will be handed a fresh short-term deal, though the Welsh defender could depart this summer. Questions also persist over whether Joao Palhinha will complete a permanent switch from Bayern Munich<\/a>, with the Portugal international having provided crucial defensive cover in the holding midfield role.<\/p>\n

Speaking to football.london<\/a> recently, Spurs legend Toby Alderweireld offered his thoughts on the reported interest in Senesi and Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. He spoke favourably of both potential signings, though Van Hecke presents the considerable obstacle of an anticipated price tag exceeding \u00a370million.<\/p>\n

“They both know the Premier League. That’s good, because I think Spurs now need stability,” said the Belgian. “They need to know the players can perform every week, week in, week out. They perform on a good level. Of course, a transfer to a new club, it’s always a bit different, but they know the Premier League and that’s very important.<\/p>\n

“Because next season, it’s impossible that we go back to this [awful] period. So I think it’s understanding they are looking for players who are proven in the Premier League. That’s something they should do. They should have a little bit more security in that.”<\/p>\n

Alderweireld was right to emphasise Spurs “don’t have the time” to wait for signings who might require time to acclimatise to the Premier League. Senesi has demonstrated across his four years in England he possesses the requisite quality and his availability on a free reduces any worries stemming from the fact he’s older than Spurs would ideally prefer in a new recruit.<\/p>\n

In the interim, it would be foolish to pass up the chance offered by bringing in Senesi without a fee. The South American would represent a perfect replacement should compatriot Romero opt to move on but Spurs must move swiftly to send a clear message of their ambition to return to the top end of the table.<\/p>\n
