\n\tAfter skipping out on this year\u2019s 98th Academy Awards<\/a>, Sean Penn<\/a> enjoyed watching the awards show on television for once.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 3x Oscar winner, who most recently won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another<\/a>, explained that the awards ceremony has \u201calways represented social discomfort to me,\u201d which is why he wasn\u2019t present to accept the award<\/a> in person.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI won\u2019t go anywhere to be with a designated group beyond eight people,\u201d Penn said during a conversation on Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival, according to USA Today<\/a>. \u201cIf you cut out two hours for your night, it gives you 15 minutes per person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNoting that any more than that \u201cis just anxiety- and dread-inducing,\u201d Penn said that \u201ceverybody understood\u201d on the One Battle After Another team why he chose to miss the event, where the film also took home Best Picture.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey know me, and they felt that it was better for my mental health,\u201d said Penn, adding: \u201cHaving only felt relief a couple other times, I got to be excited watching the awards. I really got to enjoy the Academy Awards for the first time. It was great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPenn admitted he chose to schedule a trip to meet with Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Oscars telecast, so he wouldn\u2019t have to attend.<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving previously won Best Actor for Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008), Penn explained \u201cthe best I could ever muster was relief\u201d over the victories, knowing that the people involved with those movies were supporting him.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor opted to sit out the rest of awards season after attending the 83rd Golden Globes in January, noting he couldn\u2019t handle \u201call the selfies\u201d and small talk.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople should not do selfies with anyone ever. It\u2019s bad for you,\u201d said Penn. \u201cThe Holocaust grandmother and her 6-year-old paraplegic [grandson] wheeling over? A hard no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPenn previously gave one of his Oscars<\/a> to Zelenskyy, explaining it was inspired by his \u201ccontinuing shame towards the Motion Picture Academy<\/a>,\u201d after the Academy did not invite the Ukrainian president to speak<\/a> amid their 2023 documentary Superpower.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Penn skipped this year\u2019s ceremony, Zelenskyy called him \u201ca true friend of Ukraine<\/a>\u201d for standing by the country since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022.
