Manchester City were also linked before Noonan made the decision to join Shamrock Rovers rather than leave Ireland at a younger age.

Jong Ajax and the senior side train alongside each other, creating a clear route for young players to progress.

With Ajax enduring a difficult spell by their own standards, opportunities for emerging talent could be more accessible than at some of Europe’s wealthier clubs.

The Amsterdam club finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season, well below their usual expectations, and are currently rebuilding under new management.

Shamrock Rovers take an early lead in Galway ☘️

It’s Michael Noonan with the opening goal. pic.twitter.com/sBlAQ3P6zc

— League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) May 8, 2026

A Familiar Route For Irish Talent

The Eredivisie has become an increasingly attractive destination for Irish players in recent years.

Troy Parrott’s impressive development at AZ Alkmaar has highlighted the benefits of playing in a league renowned for giving young attacking players opportunities.

For Noonan, the Dutch game appears well suited to his strengths.

The teenager has already shown remarkable maturity in choosing his career moves. Last summer, he rejected opportunities elsewhere to remain in Ireland and gain valuable senior experience with Shamrock Rovers.

That decision has only enhanced his reputation.

Rather than rushing into a move, Noonan has continued to develop while playing first-team football, earning recognition at international level and attracting even greater interest from abroad.

A Huge Moment For Shamrock Rovers

Should the transfer be completed, it would represent another significant success story for Shamrock Rovers’ player development model.

The club has increasingly established itself as a pathway for young Irish talent looking to make the jump to European football.

Noonan has been viewed as one of the standout prospects to emerge in Irish football in recent years and a move to Ajax would underline just how highly he is regarded across the continent.

While the final details still need to be completed, all indications suggest that the teenager’s future now lies in Amsterdam.

And if Ajax can provide the platform many believe they can, Michael Noonan’s next chapter could be the biggest one yet.

SEE ALSO: Ireland Player Ratings After Battling Draw With Canada In Montreal
