Family members, colleagues and representatives of An Garda Síochána will gather in Limerick today to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe.

A commemorative mass will be held in memory of Detective Garda McCabe, who was killed on 7 June, 1996, during an attempted robbery of an An Post delivery van in Adare, Co Limerick.

The killing shocked the country and remains one of the most significant attacks on members of An Garda Síochána in the history of the State.

Detective Garda McCabe was on duty alongside fellow Garda Detective Ben O’Sullivan when the An Post van they were escorting stopped in Adare.

Their unmarked patrol car was rammed from behind by a jeep before gunmen in another vehicle opened fire.

Detective Garda McCabe was fatally wounded in the attack, while Detective O’Sullivan suffered serious injuries.

In 1999, four members of the Provisional IRA were convicted of manslaughter in connection with the killing.

Three decades on, those who knew and worked with Detective Garda McCabe, along with members of his family and the wider garda community, will come together to honour his memory and service.

Family members, colleagues and representatives of An Garda Síochána will gather in Limerick today to mark the 30th…

[2
61,60,43
post-487173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
