It also aims to \u201cburden-share\u201d,<\/a> with several countries in the Mediterranean seeing higher levels of immigration.<\/p>\nCountries will either take in a certain quota of asylum seekers or make a financial contribution. Justice minister Jim O\u2019Callaghan has confirmed that Ireland will make a financial contribution amounting to \u20ac9.26m in 2027.<\/p>\n
It will also introduce an obligation for people to apply for asylum in the first country they enter, which will cut down on \u201csecondary movements\u201d.<\/p>\n
The pact will see \u201cmandatory border procedures\u201d introduced for some applicants, which aims to make quicker assessments. This will include instances where people are unlikely to be granted asylum, or they pose a security risk.<\/p>\n
They will not be allowed to enter the country and, instead, will be held in reception centres.<\/p>\n
Screening will see uniform health, identity, and security checks of migrants who \u201ccross EU external borders illegally\u201d. This must be done within seven days.<\/p>\n
Those who arrive in Ireland via the airports or ports will be subject to security checks and registered on the \u201cEurodac\u201d system, which will record fingerprints.<\/p>\n
Standard applications must be processed within six months, while those who come through the border procedure or an accelerated procedure must receive a decision within three months. Return decisions will be issued at the same time as negative asylum decisions.<\/p>\n
There have been calls on the Irish Government to enact Protocol 21 of the Lisbon Treaty, which provides Ireland with the ability to opt out of justice and home affairs measures.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for justice minister Jim O\u2019Callaghan told the Irish Examiner there are \u201cno mechanisms\u201d available to opt out of the pact, as the D\u00e1il voted to opt in two years ago and a new International Protection Bill has become law.<\/p>\n
When the EU Migration and Asylum Pact passed in the D\u00e1il in 2024, the only people who voted in favour of it were the three government parties \u2014 Fianna F\u00e1il, Fine Gael, and the Greens.<\/p>\n
The current Government has suggested that Ireland \u201ccannot go it alone\u201d, and the pact will reduce the number of people seeking asylum as \u201csecondary movements\u201d will be disallowed, and applicants will be processed faster.<\/p>\n
A lot of people, but all for different reasons.<\/p>\n
Some argue that it goes too far, while others argue that it has not gone far enough. <\/p>\n
Independent Ireland accused the Government of \u201cselling out Irish sovereignty\u201d by joining the pact. <\/p>\n
Aont\u00fa leader Peadar T\u00f3ib\u00edn said that it \u201coutsources\u201d Ireland\u2019s decisions on immigration.<\/p>\n
Sinn F\u00e9in MEP Kathleen Funchion said that her party believes each country should have its own migration policy. <\/p>\n
Most, including Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh, have expressed concerns about \u201creturn hubs\u201d, which will see centres for failed asylum seekers set up outside the bloc.<\/p>\n
