{"id":488558,"date":"2026-06-08T05:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T05:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/488558\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T05:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T05:57:09","slug":"uk-france-germany-back-zelensky-call-for-putin-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/488558\/","title":{"rendered":"UK, France, Germany back Zelensky call for Putin meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received the backing of the leaders of the UK, France and Germany in calling for direct ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine, according to a joint statement issued following defence talks in London.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at 10 Downing Street for talks as Russia&#8217;s war has stretched into its fifth year.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders &#8220;supported the proposal for a direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia &#8211; with active US and European participation &#8211; to bring about a ceasefire and support further negotiations&#8221;, they said in a joint statement with Mr Zelensky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current line of contact should be the starting point for negotiations,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;International borders must not be changed by force.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an open letter on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/002422f9-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe Ukrainian leader has reiterated his request to meet Vladimir Putin face-to-face<\/p>\n<p>Mr Putin ruled out the move, saying he saw &#8220;no point&#8221; in meeting Mr Zelensky until a possible peace deal had been agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian president told Sky News he had also met with Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in Kyiv to pass on a message to Putin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are fighting against us on our territory,&#8221; Mr Zelensky said of his message to Mr Abramovich, who is sanctioned by the UK and European Union over his ties to the Kremlin following Russia&#8217;s invasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not leave and we will not go out from our territory, no we will not give you victory,&#8221; he said, adding he had reiterated his request to meet Mr Putin face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has been asking its Western allies for more ammunition deliveries for its air defences as the country endures daily Russian strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky is seeking ways for the allies to further pressure Russia to end the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Ukrainian president wrote on X that he would be meeting with Britain&#8217;s King Charles III later today.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear site targeted<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/ukraine\/2026\/0607\/1577157-ukraine-russia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yesterday, Russia fired waves of drones and other munitions at Ukraine, with one of the attacks damaging a nuclear storage facility near the Chornobyl disaster site, Ukrainian officials said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Radiation levels at the facility remained within normal limits following the attack, although its fuel reception building was &#8220;partially destroyed&#8221;, according to Ukraine&#8217;s nuclear energy operator, Energoatom.<\/p>\n<p>Russia and Ukraine have intensified drone strikes on each other in recent months, as US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled and sidetracked by the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near Ukraine's Chornobyl power plant that was struck by Russia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/00247b6e-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe strike damaged a fuel-reception building (Photo credit: Energoatom)<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky, in an earlier online post, said Russia had used an Iranian-designed Shahed drone to &#8220;hit one of the buildings of the Centralised Spent Fuel Storage Facility&#8221; in the Chornobyl exclusion zone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of now, there are no readings exceeding normal background radiation levels.
