American actor Patrick Ball has said he had a “series of panic attacks” after getting the role of Dr Frank Langdon in The Pitt.

The 36-year-old has received critical acclaim for his role in the HBO medical drama, which is his first major role on television.

Speaking to Love Story actor Paul Anthony Kelly for US outlet Variety’s Actors On Actors feature, Ball said: “I did theatre almost exclusively for about 15 years, travelling across the country, doing regional theatre, and learning how to tell a story with an audience.

“It took until about a year and a half ago, when The Pitt came along, to get my first swing at television.

“It was a series of panic attacks for a while. The first time walking on to the Warner Bros lot, they have these little plaques on the side of each soundstage that tell you all the historic things that have been filmed on that set.

“I walk on to the set and see that On The Waterfront and Giant were shot here.

“It took about three weeks for me to breathe, and then, as I’m sure you know, after three weeks it just becomes the place that you work.

“We have this in common — this is your first big moonshot moment, and it took you a while.”

Kelly’s role as John F Kennedy Jr, son of late former US president John F Kennedy, in FX romantic drama Love Story was his major TV breakthrough.

The Canadian actor replied: “Pretty much the same timeline: It was 13 years of auditioning, a lot of nos, some close-to things, never really locking it in. I was thinking about giving it up and then this opportunity came.

“A lot of auditions, a lot of silence. I always knew this was what I wanted to do. I knew that if I stuck it out, eventually something would hit. But after about 13 years, you’re like, ‘maybe this isn’t for me’.”

He said that after landing the role he was given “three weeks to prepare”, and had to learn how to become Kennedy, with a dialect coach and a physical trainer.

The Pitt, which also stars Noah Wyle and Tracy Ifeachor, follows emergency department staff as they work through a 12-hour shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre.

The show has won five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.
