A MAN who allegedly set fire to his own home discovered the major downside of his actions this week (4 June) as he was remanded back into custody because he now had no address to which he could be bailed.<\/p>\n
Robert Kelly (46), of No Fixed Abode, appeared in Naas District Court by videolink charged with reckless damage to property without lawful excuse.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is alleged he set fire to his own house (at Ottomy Avenue, Clane on 26 May),\u201d said Sergeant Mary Meade.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a semi-detached building that belongs to Kildare County Council.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe waited until his neighbour was away but burned the whole building down.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe doctor\u2019s report indicates some schizophrenic episodes, and he is prescribed with anti-psychotic medication,\u201d said the sergeant.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook at his attendance on 26 May, I\u2019d say he won\u2019t mind, where he took a mixture of benzos mixed with cannabis,\u201d noted Judge Desmond Zaidan.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe seems to be healthy now,\u201d added the judge, gesturing to the big screen, and Mr Kelly\u2019s solicitor Matt Byrne agreed.<\/p>\n
\u201cBenzodiazepine is to slow down my heart,\u201d said Mr Kelly on screen.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe moral of the story is stop taking illicit drugs,\u201d said the judge.<\/p>\n
\u201cSee your doctors and you will manage your mental health,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
As the offence had allegedly occurred less than two weeks previously, Sgt Meade told the court that the DPP had yet to decide how to progress the prosecution.<\/p>\n
The judge remanded Kelly back into custody for two weeks until 18 June, but noticing the bail conditions as previously laid out and the size of his bond, said: \u201cso if he signs a bond he can walk?\u201d \u201cNot really,\u201d grimaced Mr Byrne.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause the house he allegedly set fire to was his, he has nowhere to go,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
