Rockville, MD\u00a0\u2013 Today, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) announced the launch of the ASHG Artificial Intelligence (AI) Initiative, a multi-part effort designed to promote and advance the responsible, effective use of AI across human genetics and genomics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

AI is rapidly transforming the ways scientists and clinicians interpret genomic data, improve diagnosis, advance personalized treatment strategies, and discover new therapeutic insights. Through this Initiative, ASHG will address the\u00a0technical and ethical\u00a0considerations\u00a0of using AI in human genetics and genomics\u00a0and create an actionable framework for how the human genetics and genomics community can harness AI and maximize its potential. This framework will provide recommendations for governance, standards, and ongoing education to enhance benefits for researchers, clinicians, and patients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are entering a new era in human genetics and genomics\u2014accelerating discovery, sharpening interpretation, and expanding what\u2019s possible in research and care,\u201d said ASHG President\u00a0Susan A. Slaugenhaupt, PhD.\u00a0\u201cThis Initiative brings leaders together to tackle important questions\u00a0about responsible use of AI in research\u00a0and develop actionable recommendations that strengthen both scientific rigor and public confidence. Our goal is to help the global genetics and genomics community use this rapidly evolving technology responsibly\u00a0so that we can\u00a0analyze large data sets and\u00a0foster\u00a0scientific\u00a0breakthroughs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ASHG AI Initiative\u2019s\u00a0core components include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

An invitation-only, in-person AI Summit\u00a0that will bring together thought leaders from academia, government, and industry to address challenges and opportunities in governing and standardizing AI\u2019s use in human genetics and genomics.\u00a0A two-day virtual symposium\u00a0that will\u00a0showcase\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0into the applications of AI in human genetics and genomics.\u00a0A published report\u00a0with recommendations and outcomes from the summit and virtual symposium, as well as an actionable \u201croadmap for the future\u201d that ASHG will use to advance the application and governance of AI in human genetics and genomics research.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ASHG AI Initiative\u00a0Task Force,\u00a0comprised\u00a0of leaders in research, clinical genetics, and industry, will guide\u00a0the initiative\u2019s\u00a0direction, shape\u00a0convening\u00a0agendas, and oversee\u00a0the\u00a0development of core deliverables.\u00a0Marylyn Ritchie, PhD, Chief AI Officer at the Medical University of South Carolina chairs the task force which includes: Donavan Cheng, PhD (Ambry Genetics);\u00a0 Eric Green, MD, PhD (Illumina); Stephanie Kraft, JD (Geisinger); Danielle Luz, MD (Stanford University School of Medicine); Ankit Malhotra, PhD (AWS); Natalie Pageler, MD (Stanford University School of Medicine); Robert Nussbaum, MD (University of California, San Francisco); Olga Troyanskya, PhD (Princeton University); Jennifer Wagner, JD, PhD (Pennsylvania State University); Nephi Walton, MD (University of Utah);\u00a0and\u00a0Kenny Wong, MS, CGC (xCures).\u00a0<\/p>\n
