The Freedom of the City of Kilkenny has been conferred on local businesses man and hotelier, Eamon Langton.

Born in Kilkenny city in 1948, Mr Langton is part of a family long connected with commerce, hospitality and civic life.

His parents Edward and Bridie Langton played a vital role in establishing the John Street premises that he took over in 1975.

Mr Langton then reshaped and expanded the business, and what began as a public house grew into a hotel, restaurant, theatre and music venue.

As a nephew of Jim Langton, one of Kilkenny’s most revered hurlers, he has also been been a devoted supporter and benefactor of Kilkenny hurling for many years.

Mr Langton received the Freedom of the City of Kilkenny this evening during a ceremony that was held at the Set Theatre, Langton’s Hotel.

The awarding of the civic honour reflects a distinguished tradition that extends back to 1760.

Over the centuries, the honour has been bestowed on individuals whose lives and work have made an exceptional contribution to society in Kilkenny.

Among the most notable recipients are Countess Constance Markievicz, who received the Freedom of the City in 1917, and Éamon de Valera, President of the Irish Free State, who was so honoured in 1933.

This evening’s event was attended by councillors, community representatives, Mr Langton’s family and friends, as well as guests from across the city and county.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr. Langton said: “To receive the freedom of the city is a huge personal honour for myself. As a proud Kilkenny man, it ranks as one of the greatest achievements of my life.”

Mayor of Kilkenny Councillor John Coonan added: “We honour a man whose vision helped shape the modern city, whose generosity played a pivotal role in our cultural and sporting life, and whose loyalty to Kilkenny has never, ever faltered.”

The Freedom of the City of Kilkenny has been conferred on local businesses man and hotelier, Eamon Langton.…

[2
61,60,43
post-489813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
