Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson<\/a> is finally letting fans in on one of the most difficult chapters of her life. The legendary rocker is now speaking publicly about her cancer journey for the very first time, and she\u2019s not sugarcoating just how harrowing it\u2019s been.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to have surgery and a bunch of rounds of chemotherapy and radiation,\u201d the 75-year-old singer told ABC News\u2019 Lara Spencer<\/a> in an interview<\/a> that aired Monday on Good Morning America<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty scary,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n

Wilson, whose documentary Ann Wilson: In My Voice arrived in May, was first diagnosed back in 2024. At the time, she broke the news to fans on Instagram<\/a>, revealing that an operation had removed something that turned out to be cancerous. Her doctors recommended a round of preventative chemotherapy and urged her to step away from the stage to focus on healing, which led Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson<\/a> to postpone their Royal Flush Tour.<\/p>\n

How Music Helped Her Heal<\/p>\n

Through it all, the \u201cAlone\u201d singer leaned on the thing that has carried her whole life: music. She described it as a \u201cpositive force\u201d during her treatment, and by Feb. 28, 2025, she felt strong enough to step back into the spotlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I felt my energy come back, I went out on tour again and it was really great,\u201d she recalled. That first night back, she made a powerful decision to show up exactly as she was. \u201cThe first night we went out on stage, I just said to myself, \u2018Well, you know what? I\u2019m just gonna be who I am, I\u2019m gonna take off the wig and just go out there in a wheelchair.’\u201d As she put it, \u201cThis is who I am. And it was remarkably liberating for me to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Letting Fans See the Real Ann Wilson<\/p>\n

Between her new documentary and return to performing, Wilson is opening up more than ever. \u201cI\u2019m something more than just that singer you see standing up there with the mic,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted them to know about my life, my kids, my husband, everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the same conversation, she looked back on the remarkable road she\u2019s traveled with Nancy. When the sisters formed Heart in 1973, they were stepping into a rock world dominated by men. They were looking to make music and had no grand plans to change the course of history with their music. \u201cMy sister and I just wanted to play guitars and we wanted to get out in front of people and we didn\u2019t think we\u2019re gonna break the glass ceiling,\u201d she said. More than 50 years later, they\u2019ve done exactly that.<\/p>\n

Their bond hasn\u2019t always been smooth, though. They\u2019ve dealt with creative clashes and rough patches along the way, but the two have since made peace. When asked how things stand now, Wilson said simply, \u201cWe\u2019re fine. We are about to go into a new project together.\u201d It seems that fans can look forward to seeing Heart back onstage again as a duo.<\/p>\n

Wilson calls one of the highlights of her career, beyond performing \u201cStairway to Heaven\u201d at the Kennedy Center Honors, watching new generations discover Heart while longtime fans keep showing up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is an honor, maybe the biggest honor is that people are coming still and they really have a great time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
