DAKAR \u2013 Democratic Republic \u2060of Congo on Monday said confirmed Ebola deaths had climbed to 101 and that the presence of armed groups was continuing to hinder the response in the hardest-hit province.<\/p>\n
The outbreak of the Bundibugyo \u200bstrain of Ebola was announced on May 15, though \u200cofficials have \u200csince said it went undetected for weeks, leaving \u200bhealth authorities behind the curve and struggling to bring it under control.<\/p>\n
It is unfolding in three provinces long beset by \u2060armed conflict: Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.<\/p>\n
In its latest situation report \u2060published on Monday, Congo\u2019s government said there had been 35 new confirmed cases in the previous 24 \u200bhours, including 10 deaths. \u2060That brought the total number of confirmed cases to 550 and the total number of confirmed \u2060deaths to 101.<\/p>\n
The \u200bcases have been recorded in 17 \u200bof Ituri\u2019s health zones as well as in seven \u200bhealth zones \u200cin North Kivu and one health zone in South Kivu.<\/p>\n
Mistrust and resistance have hampered the response, with attacks on burial teams and treatment centers reported. The latest such attack \u200coccurred on Sunday, a source familiar with the government response said, with a burial team targeted at the Nyamurongo cemetery in Bunia, leaving two people seriously injured and two vehicles damaged.<\/p>\n
The situation \u200breport \u200bsaid the presence of armed groups in Djugu, Irumu \u200band Mambasa \u2014 all in Ituri \u2014 was continuing \u201cto limit humanitarian access \u2060in multiple health zones affected or at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
It said that Bunia, the capital of Ituri, was relatively calm.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, Africa\u2019s top public health agency said the number of \u200bconfirmed Ebola cases in Congo had risen to 544.<\/p>\n
