A new national survey conducted by iReach Insights<\/a>, the research and market intelligence agency, has found that adults in Ireland are expected to spend approximately \u20ac3.4 billion on summer holidays in 2026, representing a decline of \u20ac334 million compared to 2025.<\/p>\n

The research shows that planned summer holiday spending is down 10% overall year-on-year, with adults planning to spend an average of \u20ac1,600 this summer compared to \u20ac1,800 last year.<\/p>\n

‘Growing Uncertainty’<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople still want to get away, but they\u2019re balancing that against rising everyday costs and growing uncertainty around international travel,” said Oisin Byrne<\/a>, CEO and co-founder at iReach Insights.<\/p>\n

“What\u2019s particularly interesting is the rise in staycations, especially among younger adults, suggesting that many people are now looking for holidays that feel both affordable and stress-free closer to home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The survey highlights the growing impact of both financial pressures and international uncertainty on travel behaviour, with more than half of adults (53%) saying concerns about global conflicts or international instability have changed where they are willing to travel this summer.<\/p>\n

As a result, staycations are becoming increasingly popular. Almost 3 in 10 adults (29%) say they are more likely to holiday in Ireland this year instead of travelling abroad, with 13% saying they are \u201cmuch more likely\u201d to choose a domestic break.<\/p>\n

The trend is particularly strong among younger adults aged 18\u201324, with almost half (48%) saying they are more likely to holiday in Ireland this summer, including 23% who are much more likely to do so.<\/p>\n

Despite this shift, overseas travel remains popular, with 50% of adults planning to holiday abroad this summer. Of those planning an overseas trip, 35% have already booked their holidays.<\/p>\n

Personal Financial Pressures<\/p>\n

When asked about the factors having the biggest impact on their holiday decisions this year, the rising cost of living emerged as the leading concern, cited by half of adults (50%). Rising fuel costs were identified by 36%, while accommodation prices were highlighted by 32%.<\/p>\n

Global instability is also weighing heavily on travel decisions, with 30% of adults saying global conflicts are having the biggest impact on their holiday choices this year.<\/p>\n
