{"id":492952,"date":"2026-06-10T19:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T19:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/492952\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T19:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T19:06:14","slug":"nasas-ambitious-artemis-3-mission-includes-3-giant-rocket-launches-2-private-moon-landers-and-1-big-question-can-it-all-work-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/492952\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA&#8217;s ambitious Artemis 3 mission includes 3 giant rocket launches, 2 private moon landers and 1 big question: Can it all work together?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-a6f46e74-b160-4958-bd47-ba1bdebe9055\">HOUSTON \u2014 When you get down to brass tacks, NASA&#8217;s Artemis 3 mission in 2027 looks to be one of agency&#8217;s most complicated missions ever \u2014 one that relies on not one but three giant rockets and a pair of private moon lander prototypes that haven&#8217;t even been built yet.<\/p>\n<p>If NASA&#8217;s schedule holds, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-artemis-3-astronaut-crew\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-artemis-3-astronaut-crew\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-artemis-3-astronaut-crew\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four Artemis 3 astronauts<\/a> will launch aboard an Orion spacecraft sometime in the second half of next year. Once in Earth orbit, they&#8217;ll test Orion&#8217;s capability to fly and function with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two Artemis moon lander designs<\/a>. NASA introduced that crew on Tuesday (June 9) during a ceremony here at the Johnson Space Center that also included new details on how the Artemis 3 mission will work.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a6f46e74-b160-4958-bd47-ba1bdebe9055-2\">&#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> is an incredibly exciting, complicated, and highly coordinated multi-launch campaign,&#8221; NASA Artemis program manager Jeremy Parsons said Tuesday. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to happen in a short period of time with three of the world&#8217;s most powerful rockets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f290ca53-9279-471a-9f27-6c19beb38e14\">Artemis 3 will be commanded by NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik, with the European Space Agency&#8217;s Luca Parmitano as pilot. Mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas, both of NASA, round out the crew. They will fly Orion&#8217;s longest crewed flight yet, and move NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a> one step closer to returning astronauts to the surface of the moon by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what we knew before Tuesday&#8217;s mission update:<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>NASA planned to launch Orion to orbit to rendezvous and dock with at least one of the commercial lunar lander vehicles contracted for Artemis. SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a>, and Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon lander<\/a> have each faced development delays, with explosive accidents for both companies occurring within the last year. Isaacman said NAS will coordinate Artemis 3 with launches of SpaceX&#8217;s massive Starship rocket and Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn rocket<\/a> that will launch their respective landers after NASA&#8217;s S<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pace Launch System<\/a> (SLS) launches Orion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to launch if we don&#8217;t feel like we can get enough out of it in order to ensure a follow-on lunar landing is successful,&#8221; Isaacman said to members of the media afterward. (Image credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6400eab4-2203-4882-afc2-ef074e4d12ea\">Other new information delivered Tuesday includes an update on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis spacesuits<\/a>. A spacesuit prototype built by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/axiom-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/axiom-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/axiom-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Axiom Space<\/a> will launch aboard Blue Moon on Artemis 3, and will then be tested out by Artemis 3 astronauts once Orion docks with the lander. (Image credit: SpaceX)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0b80bb12-e20f-4d02-88cb-c491ddc03f35\">&#8220;Next year we&#8217;ll support Artemis 3 and the planned rendezvous and docking with Orion in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a>,&#8221; said Jessica Jensen, SpaceX&#8217;s vice president of customer operations and intergration. &#8220;For that mission, we&#8217;re going to be using a V3 vehicle off the line with an added docking adapter.&#8221; V3, or Version 3, is SpaceX&#8217;s latest Starship design, which the company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched on its first test flight in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen said SpaceX aims to launch two Starships to conduct an in-flight refueling demonstration by the end of the year. &#8220;We&#8217;re also actively building our first flight fidelity Starship HLS [Human Landing System] cabin at Starbase,&#8221; Jensen said. &#8220;The primary structure is assembled and prepared to be outfitted with key functional systems like avionics, power, life support systems, and more to come in the next few months.&#8221; SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/spacex-looking-into-simplified-starship-artemis-3-mission-to-get-astronauts-to-the-moon-faster\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/spacex-looking-into-simplified-starship-artemis-3-mission-to-get-astronauts-to-the-moon-faster\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/spacex-looking-into-simplified-starship-artemis-3-mission-to-get-astronauts-to-the-moon-faster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled the Starship crew cabin<\/a> design last year.<\/p>\n<p>Axiom plans to include an Artemis spacesuit in a launch to the International Space Station in 2027, sometime before the Artemis 3 mission, for longer term testing on orbit. The prototype on Artemis 3 will be a &#8220;mass simulator&#8221; and allow for the testing of hardware interface checkouts, NASA and Axiom officials have said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-35aabac6-df22-4925-bc66-75191c350620\">The mission timeline was also clarified during the crew announcement ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In total, we expect the mission to last around two weeks,&#8221; Parsons said.<\/p>\n<p>The mission will begin with Blue Origin&#8217;s launch of the Blue Moon moon lander on a New Glenn rocket. The Artemis 3 crew will launch next and dock their <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> with Blue Moon for tests.
