The sod has been officially turned on the Letterkenny 2040 – Reimagined Market Square project, marking the start of works on a significant public realm enhancement for the town centre.

The project is funded by Donegal County Council and the former Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and is expected to provide long-term benefits for the town and wider community.

Located at Market Square, Castle Street and Main Street, the development involves the removal of existing public realm features, including the bandstand, walls, steps, trees and the earth embankment to the rear.

The project will transform the space through the creation of a new, modern public realm environment.

This will include a shared surface layout, traffic calming measures, stepped access to Main Street, and two public plazas incorporating a water feature. The works will also deliver enhanced accessibility infrastructure, integrated low-level planting, revised carriageways, junctions and footpaths, along with new public seating, lighting, street furniture and cycle stands.

The redevelopment is expected to strengthen the town’s capacity to host civic and social events, while ensuring accessibility for people of all abilities.

James Browne TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, said he was very pleased to see this project moving to the construction stage.

He added “It has been allocated almost €3 million under the former Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, now called the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund. It will play a vital role in positioning Letterkenny as an attractive location for people to live and invest in as well as to visit.

“Supporting Local Authorities with projects such as these is exactly what the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund is intended for – to create positive momentum by using targeted Exchequer investment as a catalyst for regeneration and rejuvenation of urban areas that would not otherwise have the opportunity to realise their potential.

“This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to supporting sustainable, well designed urban areas that serve the needs of local communities and businesses. I commend Donegal County Council for its ambition and leadership in bringing forward this important regeneration project and look forward to returning to see the outcome of this ambitious project once completed.”

Garry Martin, Deputy Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, added “The Letterkenny 2040 – Market Square project is a major step in the regeneration of Letterkenny to enable the future prosperity and growth of Donegal’s largest town, and it shows the scale of ambition and commitment being shown by both the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and Donegal County Council.”

The sod has been officially turned on the Letterkenny 2040 – Reimagined Market Square project, marking the start…

[2
61,60,43
post-492978","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news
["GET
