Postman Barry Daly\u2019s partner woke to hear him outside the house shouting, \u2018stop\u2019, and she heard another voice shouting: \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you.\u201d Katie O\u2019Reilly was giving evidence on the fifth day of the murder trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.<\/p>\n
Ms O\u2019Reilly was in bed when she heard those words from outside the house and she added that she heard \u201csomeone get a belt of something\u201d. As she lay in bed with one of her four children she said to herself: \u201cI hope to God that is not Barry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She also testified that: \u201cThe bang I heard was like someone getting a whack of something.\u201d Ms Justice Siobh\u00e1n Lankford said as the witness left the witness box: \u201cI want to sympathise with you and your family on your loss.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Siobh\u00e1n Ryall testified that she got a phone call from her mother who neighbours the house where Barry Daly was found: \u201cMy mum said they found Barry on the driveway, I think he is dead. On my way I rang the ambulance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Siobh\u00e1n Ryall cried as she testified: \u201cHe was lying lengthways to the gate. When I got out of the car I knelt next to him. There was a lot of blood. The first thing I noticed was this hole in his cheek. I listened for breath. I held his chest to see if I could feel his heartbeat.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard some kind of choking. I put him into a recovery position. The ambulance lady (on the phone) said to put him on his back and do chest compressions. I did it until the first responders came. His bones cracked and I thought I was doing it wrong. The lady said just keep going.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first responders used a defibrillator. The ambulance crew came on the scene, they got there very quick.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n It will haunt me forever I could not bring him back. I tried.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n
Alex Deady and two juveniles, aged 16 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are on trial charged with murdering 44-year-old postman, Barry Daly at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile on October 12, 2025. Alex Deady, aged 20, and the 17-year-old pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. The 16-year-old simply pleaded not guilty to murder. The ages relate to the date of the incident.<\/p>\n
Lisa Smith was outside Eily\u2019s pub at closing time on the night the town was celebrating the local hurling team\u2019s victory in the Junior B final: \u201cBarry Daly came over to me and said, \u2018I didn\u2019t mean it\u2019 (in relation to striking Rachel O\u2019Kelly\u2019s mouth). I said to Barry, ‘Go home, let them at it, they\u2019re only kids’.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI went over to Alex and put my hands on his arms and said to calm down and go home and he said to get my hands off him. He had no top on.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201c(Afterwards in the town), My niece in Perth rang and said Barry Daly is dead. I was shouting at Alex that he is dead. He said he is not dead. He put his head in his hands and cried.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brian Sweeney testified that Seamus Hunter shouted at Alex and the 17-year-old who is also on trial, called them \u2018knackers\u2019 and told them to go home.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw Alex in the direction of Seamus Hunter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n He (Alex) had a golf club in his hand and made a swing but stopped before it made contact\u2026 It was an iron\u2026 Alex had no top on at that stage\u2026\u00a0\n <\/p>\n
“He was shouting that his \u2018missus\u2019 had been hit (He understood this to refer to Alex\u2019s girlfriend),\u201d Mr Sweeney said.<\/p>\n
Billy O\u2019Brien said he took a golf club off Alex and gave it to the publican, Ollie Sheehan, who put it out of harm\u2019s way in the pub which had just been closed after the night. Seamus Hunter said that after closing time he was trying to stop the fighting and arguing that was going on the street and to calm things down.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw two young fellas with golf clubs. I knew one was Alex Deady. I didn\u2019t recognise the other fella. Alex had no shirt on. When I saw them I roared \u2014 excuse the language \u2014 \u2018What are ye f***ing at, ye f***ing knackers\u2019. I wanted to stop them. It was the first thing out of my mouth. They roared back, \u2018don\u2019t call us knackers\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cI walked towards them, my hands in the air, let them know I wasn\u2019t fighting. I said, \u2018Lads, ye can\u2019t go around with golf clubs, go home\u2019. I got a slap on the nose, it was (17-year-old) with a head-butt\u2026 My nose was bleeding,\u201d Mr Hunter said.<\/p>\n
When he got home he thought they could have gone to Barry\u2019s house and he (Mr Hunter) grabbed a baseball bat, left his house and crossed the road. He said he saw Alex and the 17-year-old and \u201ca third lad I didn\u2019t know\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said he heard the 17-year-old say, \u201cWe have to get rid of these\u201d and then he and Alex each threw a golf club over a wall. He said the third young fella stood back a bit and didn\u2019t say or do anything. Mr Hunter said they ran down in the direction of the town.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the evidence, Joan O\u2019Reilly, mother of Barry Daly\u2019s partner, said he was a great father and they all looked forward to him coming into the house.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms O\u2019Reilly smiled as she recalled saying to the deceased earlier that night, \u201cDon\u2019t be late tonight\u201d and he joked back to her, \u201cThat\u2019s OK, pet.\u201d She said, \u201cHe was always blaggarding like that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
