{"id":493837,"date":"2026-06-11T06:45:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T06:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/493837\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T06:45:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T06:45:30","slug":"ecb-set-to-hike-interest-rates-today-and-again-in-september-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/493837\/","title":{"rendered":"ECB set to hike interest rates today, and again in September \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank\">European Central Bank<\/a> (ECB) is expected to follow up an almost-certain quarter of a percentage point hike to its key interest rates on Thursday, the first in almost two years, by laying the path for another increase in September, according to economists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bank\u2019s president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christine-lagarde\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christine-lagarde\">Christine Lagarde<\/a>, has previously outlined that its governing council could take three potential responses to the energy price shock sparked by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">Iran war<\/a>: \u201clook through\u201d the fuel price rise and see if inflation falls back, \u201cmeasured tightening\u201d or \u201cforceful or persistent\u201d rates action. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 60 per cent of 80 economists polled by Reuters last week said they expected the ECB to follow up a rate increase with one additional rate increase this year, likely in September. This is broadly in line with what money markets have priced in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll in all the ECB looks set to embark on a measured tightening of policy rates but when they stress the uncertainty of events in the Middle East they mean it. Were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oil\/\">oil<\/a> prices to fall rapidly the rationale for further rate hikes might suddenly disappear,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conall-mac-coille\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conall-mac-coille\/\">Conall Mac Coille<\/a>, chief economist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bank-of-ireland\/\">Bank of Ireland<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Euro-zone inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/06\/02\/euro-zone-inflation-rises-to-32-in-may-as-ecb-prepares-to-raise-rates\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/06\/02\/euro-zone-inflation-rises-to-32-in-may-as-ecb-prepares-to-raise-rates\/\">rose to an annual rate of 3.2 per cent in May<\/a>, well above the ECB\u2019s 2 per cent target, as energy prices soared 10.9 per cent, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\">Eurostat<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a>\u2019s statistics agency. Within that, core inflation \u2013 which excludes energy and food \u2013 rose by 2.5 per cent, indicating that the energy shock is having a broader influence on consumer prices across the single-currency region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ECB\u2019s chief economist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\">Philip Lane<\/a>, has already flagged that his staff will likely raise their inflation forecasts in June. A number of ECB governing council members have signalled that a June increase is certain. However, the council will have to balance addressing inflation risks against signs that the outlook for the wider economy is weakening when setting monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/05\/26\/top-ecb-policymakers-lay-groundwork-for-june-rate-rise\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Top ECB policymakers lay groundwork for June rate riseOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is little doubt about Thursday\u2019s rate decision itself \u2013 markets fully price a hike. Instead, the focus will be on any forward guidance,\u201d said HSBC economist Anja Sabine Heimann, adding that signs of slowing underlying economic growth across the euro zone \u201cunderscore that the ECB hiking cycle will likely be limited\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ECB moved its key deposit rate from minus 0.5 per cent to 4 per cent between June 2022 and September 2023 as euro-zone inflation soared to as high as 10.6 per cent, driven by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. It subsequently lowered the rate to 2 per cent through a series of cuts over 13 months to September last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While moves in ECB rates have an automatic impact on loans, like such as tracker mortgages, where costs are tied to policy rates, they also influence how lenders generally price credit and deposits.
