{"id":493850,"date":"2026-06-11T06:52:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T06:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/493850\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T06:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T06:52:10","slug":"will-jennies-law-help-save-women-in-ireland-from-domestic-abuse-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/493850\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Jennie\u2019s Law help save women in Ireland from domestic abuse? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Abusers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/06\/08\/abusers-convicted-of-serious-domestic-violence-to-be-named-on-public-register-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/06\/08\/abusers-convicted-of-serious-domestic-violence-to-be-named-on-public-register-for-first-time\/\">convicted of serious domestic violence <\/a>will have their names included on a publicly available register under a new law designed to allow those with concerns to check whether their partner has a violent past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The proposed legislation will be known as Jennie\u2019s Law in honour of Jennifer Poole, a 24-year-old mother of two who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/courts\/criminal-court\/man-with-disposition-for-violence-upon-women-sentenced-to-life-for-jennifer-poole-s-murder-1.4865466\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/crime-and-law\/courts\/criminal-court\/man-with-disposition-for-violence-upon-women-sentenced-to-life-for-jennifer-poole-s-murder-1.4865466\" target=\"_blank\">murdered by her former partner Gavin Murphy in 2021<\/a>. Poole did not know he had a history of abusive behaviour, including a conviction for assaulting a former partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The Poole family believe that had Jennifer known about Murphy\u2019s previous convictions she might still be alive. They have campaigned for the new register since her murder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">So how will it work? What offences will be covered? What information will be on the register? And are there any unintended consequences for such a register \u2013 particularly for victims? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Presented by Bernice Harrison.
