A repertory movie summer wouldn\u2019t be complete without a yearning-filled Italian classic set in Tuscany. <\/p>\n

After a successful Kino Lorber-released restoration of Luchino Visconti<\/a>\u2018s \u201cConversation Piece\u201d at New York City\u2019s Film<\/a> Forum this past winter, the theater will host a Janus Films restoration of the Italian master\u2019s fifth feature, \u201cWhite Nights<\/a>.\u201d An adaptation of a Fyodor Dostoevsky story, \u201cWhite Nights\u201d swaps out the original St. Petersburg location for the Tuscan city of Livorno \u2014 a far more poetic location for romantic ennui and restlessness, no? <\/p>\n

Marcello Mastroianni<\/a> starred in the film in the early days of his leading-man career, only a few years before movies that turned him into a brooding matinee idol, like Federico Fellini\u2019s \u201cLa Dolce Vita\u201d and \u201c8 1\/2,\u201d and Michelangelo Antonioni\u2019s \u201cLa Notte.\u201d Austria-born Swiss actress Maria Schell co-stars as his leading lady, by then established as one of German cinema\u2019s most eminent stars. A year later, she\u2019d star in another Dostoevsky adaptation, Richard Brooks\u2019 \u201cThe Brothers Karamazov.\u201d <\/p>\n

Luchino Visconti<\/a>\u2019s \u2018White Nights\u2019 is an exquisite adaptation of Dostoevsky\u2019s legendary novella, transforming this romantic, shattering tale of two restless souls into a ravishing black-and-white dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite Nights\u201d was shot entirely on a soundstage at the famed Cinecitt\u00e0 Studios<\/a> outside Rome \u2014 where Fellini would shoot \u201cLa Dolce Vita\u201d and \u201cCasanova.\u201d The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was named one of the best films of its year by Cahiers du Cin\u00e9ma, just below \u201cTouch of Evil\u201d and \u201cThe Seventh Seal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Janus Films will open the new 4K restoration of \u201cWhite Nights\u201d starting July 24 at Film Forum.<\/p>\n
