Uniquely, Ireland\u2019s inaugural Open Championships took place not in Dublin, but in Limerick \u2014 placing Limerick Lawn Tennis Club at the forefront of tennis history and predating Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club by two years.<\/p>\n<p>From its inception, the Championships demonstrated remarkable inclusivity, with the original programme featuring Gentlemen\u2019s Open Singles, Gentlemen\u2019s Handicap Doubles, Gentlemen\u2019s Open Doubles, and Ladies Open Singles.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-355272\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<a onclick=\"\" class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"MjcyLDIsMSw2MA==\" href=\"https:\/\/whiskeyexperience.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"299\" onload=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" style=\"width:auto;\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/mothermacs-2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    Signup for the Limerick Post newsletter&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>The Ladies Open Singles was included from the outset \u2014 seven years before Wimbledon introduced a ladies\u2019 event in 1884 \u2014 making it the oldest ladies tennis tournament in Britain and Ireland, while its men\u2019s championship is second only to Wimbledon in longevity.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 Championships, running from June 12 to 20, will feature nine days of high-quality competition, welcoming players from Open Grade 1 through to Grade 6, all competing within the World Tennis Number (WTN) system.
