US<\/a> president \u200cDonald Trump<\/a> said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> would be opened as soon as \u200ca \u201cgreat settlement\u201d of the war in Iran<\/a> was signed, an event he said he expected \u200bwould happen within days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just made a great settlement of the war with Iran,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strait will officially open as soon as \u200bwe sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump \u2060said he had just talked to Israel\u2019s<\/a> prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu<\/a>, \u200cand \u200chad \u200balso spoken with the leaders of Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and others. He said he \u2060would soon speak to \u200bTurkey\u2019s president Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n

The deal resolved the \u200bissue of Iran pursuing the development of a nuclear weapon, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost \u200cimportantly we have a deal that \u200bIran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole \u2060purpose of what we had \u2060to go through \u200bto get this. So it was a very big thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The US president said he believed Iran\u2019s supreme leader \u200bMojtaba Khamenei had approved the deal, which \u200cwould \u200ctrigger the \u200bopening of the Strait of Hormuz \u2060and \u200bthe lifting of \u200ba US blockade on \u200cIranian ports.<\/p>\n

When asked \u200bby a reporter at the \u2060White House \u2060whether \u200bKhamenei had approved the deal, Trump said: \u201cI understand the answer is yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump described the deal as \u201ca very strong \u200cmemorandum of understanding,\u201d \u2060adding it was \u201ca little conceptual, but it\u2019s something \u200cthat\u2019s going to get done\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump called off new strikes on Iran earlier on Thursday, saying \u201cfinal points\u201d of an initial peace deal had been approved and details of a signing ceremony would be announced shortly.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s semi-official Fars news agency reported that Tehran was likely to approve the \u200cagreement though it \u2060has yet to give a formal response. The cancellation of strikes came hours after the president said the US military would attack \u200cIran for a third consecutive night.<\/p>\n

Since mid-March, Trump has repeatedly claimed that a deal with \u200bIran to end the war is close. The \u200btwo sides have traded strikes throughout the week, straining a ceasefire announced in April.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, Trump had said the US would hit Iran \u201cvery hard tonight\u201d. He even \u200cadded that he wanted at some point to take Iran\u2019s \u200boil-infrastructure hub Kharg Island, after a second day of strikes by both sides in the Gulf appeared to threaten a return to \u2060all-out war.<\/p>\n

A fragile ceasefire has been in place since \u2060early April. Iranian sources and western officials \u200bearlier said indirect US-Iranian talks on a preliminary peace deal had intensified, while the renewed hostilities this week undermined prospects for a swift end to the conflict. Oil prices fell sharply after Trump said he had cancelled the US plans to strike Iran, while stocks extended their gains.<\/p>\n

United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres had called on \u200cboth sides to redouble their efforts \u201ctowards a \u2060peaceful, comprehensive and durable agreement that advances regional and international peace and security,\u201d UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. <\/p>\n

The war has killed thousands of people, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and pushed up global oil prices since the US and Israel launched air strikes on \u200cIran on February 28th. <\/p>\n

Despite the latest hostilities, three Iranian sources and western officials said the talks had not yet dealt in detail with issues including a mechanism for the release \u200bof billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis war, from a military standpoint, is [at] a dead \u200bend,\u201c said one of the Iranian sources. \u201dThe Americans could not achieve their goals by attacking Iran. There has been progress in negotiations.”<\/p>\n

The war has disrupted roughly a fifth of global supply of crude \u200coil and liquefied natural gas, sending prices sharply higher. Iran \u2060has blocked traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US has maintained its own blockade on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

Fighting continued in a parallel war in Lebanon between Israel and Iran-backed Hizbullah militants.<\/p>\n

Tehran\u2019s demands in ceasefire talks include an \u200bend to Israel\u2019s attacks in Lebanon, the lifting of sanctions on Iran, the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets and recognition of its control of the strait.<\/p>\n

Trump says Iran must end its restrictions on shipping through Hormuz. He also says any peace deal must ensure Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapon.
