{"id":494992,"date":"2026-06-11T22:01:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T22:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/494992\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T22:01:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T22:01:11","slug":"berlusconi-children-succeed-in-dublin-court-application-tied-to-italian-bank-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/494992\/","title":{"rendered":"Berlusconi children succeed in Dublin court application tied to Italian bank \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The billionaire children of late Italian prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/silvio-berlusconi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/silvio-berlusconi\/\">Silvio Berlusconi<\/a> have succeeded in a Dublin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/high-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/high-court\/\">High Court<\/a> application related to their shareholding in an Italian bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Thursday, Judge Mary Rose Gearty gave permission to Silvio\u2019s eldest children, Marina Elvira Berlusconi and Pier Silvio Berlusconi, to bring a late notification to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-bank-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-bank-of-ireland\/\">Central Bank of Ireland<\/a> relating to their acquisition of a significant shareholding in lender Banca Mediolanum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under statutory regulations, notification of such a transaction to the Central Bank of Ireland is required. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fininvest, a Berlusconi family investment group, is a significant shareholder in the Banca Mediolanum. Mediolanum\u2019s Irish fund-management arm is regulated by the Central Bank and responsible for investments worth about \u20ac80 billion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fininvest, through its investment, operates in the media and entertainment industry, publishing and financial services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/04\/23\/two-berlusconi-children-in-high-court-proceedings-involving-central-bank\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billionaire children of Silvio Berlusconi set for Dublin High Court proceedings with Central BankOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to a sworn statement filed to the High Court, Marina said her father held majority control of Fininvest prior to his death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After his death in 2023, aged 86, Silvio\u2019s shares in Fininvest were divided among his five children, including Marina and Pier Silvio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In accordance with Silvio\u2019s wishes, Marina and Pier Silvio subsequently entered an agreement to take joint control of Fininvest in September 2023. They entered another similar agreement in January 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Through their inheritance and subsequent agreements, Marina and Pier Silvio acquired an \u201cindirect qualifying holding\u201d of Fininvest\u2019s 30.02 per cent stake in Mediolanum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Such an acquisition requires notification to the Central Bank of Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Solicitors for the Berlusconis were informed by the Central Bank in August 2025 that it required a High Court order to provide retrospective approval for the acquisition in Mediolanum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Thursday, barrister Declan Murphy, for Marina and Pier Silvio, instructed by William Fry, moved an application seeking permission for late notification to the Central Bank of the acquisition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The application was on notice to the Central Bank. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge granted the orders as sought. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Forbes magazine estimates the fortune of Marina, chairman of the Fininvest board, is valued in the region of \u20ac2.7 billion.
