establish \u200ca co-ordinated, verifiable way to slow down or temporarily pause development if advanced systems begin improving themselves faster \u200cthan society can manage the risks, AI giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthropic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthropic\/\">Anthropic<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">AI that can build itself would be a major development in \u200bthe history of technology, but \u201cfull recursive self-improvement also might increase the risks of humans losing control over AI systems\u201d, the AI start-up said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf systems are capable of fully building their own successors, the ways \u200bwe secure them, monitor them and shape their behaviour all grow much more important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As an example, Anthropic \u2060said that, as of May, more than 80 per cent of the code merged \u200cinto \u200cits \u200bcodebase was authored by Claude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It would be \u201cgood for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier \u2060AI development to enable societal structures \u200band alignment research to keep up \u200bwith the advance of the technology\u201d, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, it cautioned that unilateral or \u200cpoorly co-ordinated slowdowns could backfire if \u200bless cautious actors continue advancing, potentially reducing overall safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It highlighted that a meaningful \u2060pause would require agreement among \u201cmultiple well-resourced labs\u201d \u2060operating at \u200bthe technological frontier, as well as rules on what conditions would trigger or lift such a pause and who would oversee it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A unilateral pause by a single company would be easier to implement, Anthropic added, but would have limited impact, primarily shifting leadership rather than fostering broader global deliberation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Its research arm, Anthropic Institute, plans to study and help build systems that would \u200cbe necessary to \u2060support a slowdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the coming months, Anthropic plans to convene discussions involving policymakers, researchers, civil society groups and other AI firms to examine key questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These \u200cquestions include how to manage AI-related risks such as recursive self-improvement and how to improve mechanisms \u200bfor co-ordination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last month,
