{"id":495414,"date":"2026-06-12T04:11:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T04:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495414\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T04:11:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T04:11:21","slug":"the-broad-street-avenue-of-the-arts-makeover-will-include-new-sculptures-by-a-philadelphia-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495414\/","title":{"rendered":"The Broad Street Avenue of the Arts makeover will include new sculptures by a Philadelphia artist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Broad Street Avenue of the Arts makeover project, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/broad-street-avenue-of-the-arts-streetscape-20260114.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/broad-street-avenue-of-the-arts-streetscape-20260114.html\">which broke ground in January<\/a>, is inching its way to completion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The remaking of the median on South Broad Street in front of the Kimmel Center, part of the larger <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/broad-street-avenue-of-the-arts-streetscape-20260114.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AveArts 2.0 project<\/a>, will now include the installation of a pair of sculptures by <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/spruce-street-harbor-park-floating-sculptures-miguel-horn-20191103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/spruce-street-harbor-park-floating-sculptures-miguel-horn-20191103.html\">artist Miguel Horn<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The South Philly-based artist, who is behind several public sculptures in the city, including <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"\"\/><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/center-city\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center City<\/a>\u2019s<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/life\/cuthbert-street-sculpture-philadelphia-contrafuerte-miguel-antonio-horn-20210916.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/life\/cuthbert-street-sculpture-philadelphia-contrafuerte-miguel-antonio-horn-20210916.html\"> ContraFuerte<\/a>, sought approval for the sculptures\u2019 concept review in a Philadelphia Art Commission meeting on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The sculptures are scheduled to be installed this fall and remain in place for five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The  Broad Street renovation project involves reconstructing the median into a raised planter, adding landscaping, restoring pavement, and installing pedestals and lighting for the public art. The median construction  is scheduled to be completed this month, while Horn\u2019s sculptures will be installed in the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/arts\/spruce-street-harbor-park-floating-sculptures-miguel-horn-20191103.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">A Philly artist created a giant sculpture of his father\u2019s head that disappears with the tides. Imagine his father\u2019s surprise.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Made of bright yellow powder coated steel, Horn\u2019s sculptures will display a blurred image of moving pedestrians. The concept for the design, Horn said, came from him making Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) scans of buildings around Philadelphia. He began to notice something interesting when people walked in front of the scanner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThis section of the Reading Terminal Market at Filbert Street was flooded with pedestrians walking by, and these movements of pedestrians across this space created this tapestry of figurative elements, abstraction, and I just fell in love,\u201d Horn said at Wednesday\u2019s meeting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He then proceeded to go through the scans and select different movements to create the final sculpture design of walking pedestrians. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThis Muybridge-like study of movement for me was the most compelling thing sculpturally I\u2019ve seen rendered on a computer screen in years,\u201d he said, referring to  the pioneering photographer best known for creating The Horse in Motion (1878).<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Horn\u2019s design did raise some concerns among attendees on Wednesday, including  potential sight line blockages for motorists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In the meeting, he assured that there was no concern for safety. His presentation to the Arts Commission claimed that the sculptures would still allow for a 215-foot sight line of incoming traffic  on either side of the median.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThere will not be an interruption to any visual sight lines,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Design Advocacy Group (DAG) vice-chair David Brownlee, who did not attend Wednesday\u2019s meeting, considers planting trees in the median impractical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cNo one has ever said to me that the problem with Broad Street is there\u2019s no shade in the middle of the street,\u201d he said. \u201cOr that\u2019s the problem with Broad Street is you get out of the street and you look up and see that tower of City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Rather than placing trees and sculpture in the middle of the road, Brownlee suggested  widening of sidewalks and installing art on each side so pedestrians can view them while walking. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Horn\u2019s concept review for the sculptures was  approved by the Arts Commission, with a final review expected at a later date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The AveArts 2.0 project aims to beautify Avenue of the Arts into a cohesive streetscape. The plan is to renovate all 10 blocks between City Hall and Washington Avenue at a cost of $15 million per block. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Funding for the project is expected to be a mix of public money, corporate and individual donations, and foundation support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI find this to be a reclamation of our public space through this figurative artwork,\u201d Horn said. \u201cI\u2019m constantly trying to find opportunities to bring the human experience to the forefront of these public spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A previous version of the article misstated the median project\u2019s timeline.
