{"id":495422,"date":"2026-06-12T04:18:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T04:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495422\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T04:18:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T04:18:10","slug":"giant-underground-detector-releases-first-major-findings-on-ghost-particles-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495422\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant Underground Detector Releases First Major Findings on Ghost Particles : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2013 A massive underground detector aimed at understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/high-energy-neutrino-ghost-particle-c8177a5eabdcab2fd045d92e872e1fb1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mysterious ghost particles<\/a> in our universe released its first major results on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jiangmen-underground-neutrino-observatory-china-6955b6bc37acdace04d8632c2e27f3f9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory<\/a> in China started collecting data in August with the goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6wBNOniqCPY&amp;t=1s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">understanding neutrinos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These tiny cosmic particles date back to the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"204791\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/physics-panel-to-feds-beam-us-up-some-neutrinos-78a55c14adca44f8bf9e65f77955005c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whiz harmlessly through our bodies<\/a> by the trillions every second.<\/p>\n<p>Yet they weigh almost nothing, making them difficult to sniff out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Workers-in-blue-protective-suits-install-components-inside-the-large-spherical-JUNO-detector-642x428.jpeg\" alt=\"Workers in blue protective suits install components inside the large spherical JUNO detector, surrounded by metal frames and circular sensor mounts.\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-204799\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Workers on the underside of the detector. (AP Photo\/Ng Han Guan)<\/p>\n<p>The JUNO team <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cas.cn\/newsroom\/cas-in-media\/202606\/t20260611_1161689.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled its initial findings<\/a> from two months of data collection \u2013 including some of the most precise measurements to date of how  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neutrinos\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73028\" data-postid=\"204791\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">neutrinos<\/a> switch between three varieties, or flavors, as they zip through space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It really makes me look forward to more exciting results in the future,&#8221; said physicist Kate Scholberg with Duke University, who had no role in the new research.<\/p>\n<p>The spherical JUNO detector is located 2,297 feet (700 meters) underground.
