The RTÉ podcast series First Conviction has won the top award at the Justice Media Awards 2026.

The podcast was a joint investigation from RTÉ Documentary on One and RTÉ Investigates and was narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Ruth Negga.

The series followed the couple at the centre of Ireland’s first and only female genital mutilation (FGM) case that was later overturned on appeal.

The investigation marked the first time the couple had spoken publicly about what happened to their family.

First Conviction was also selected as a winner in the Broadcast (podcast) Category before snagging the overall prize from a record-breaking 674 entries and 158 shortlisted entries.

Series Producer with RTÉ Documentary on One, Liam O’Brien, said they were “delighted that the Law Society recognised the legal issues that were at play in the case”.

Mr O’Brien added that the case has not concluded and a judgment on the couple’s application for a certificate of miscarriage of justice will be delivered in the Court of Appeal on 19 June at the Criminal Courts of Justice.

The family are seeking the certificate of a miscarriage of justice to clear their names. It could potentially lead to one of the biggest compensation payments in the history of the State.

RTÉ Radio 1’s Brian O’Connell won Broadcast Journalist (Radio – National) for his piece Inside the Drug Treatment Court while Barry Cummins, Sallyanne Godson, Sean Higgins and Martin Vale won Court Reporting (Broadcast) for Tina’s Truth, on the Tina Satchwell murder case.

Other topics that appeared across the 16 award categories included: Issues relating to coercive control, domestic violence, critiques of the justice system, AI and data centres, as well as the DJ Carey case.

President of the Law Society, Rosemarie Loftus, said: “The Law Society Justice Media Awards continue to demonstrate the vital role journalism plays in helping the public understand the law, the courts and the issues that shape our society.”

She added that First Conviction was “educational, informative, and highlighted systematic flaws with our legal system”.

“It captured the mood of the nation, highlighting distinct miscarriages of justice and areas of concern within the legal system and where they need to be improved. It was a stand-out piece of journalism.”

The RTÉ podcast series First Conviction has won the top award at the Justice Media Awards 2026.
