{"id":495524,"date":"2026-06-12T05:44:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T05:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495524\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T05:44:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T05:44:10","slug":"world-cup-2026-oh-the-hero-as-south-korea-topple-czechs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/495524\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cup 2026: Oh the hero as South Korea topple Czechs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Substitute Oh Hyeon-Gu gave South Korea a winning start to the World Cup as they came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>Oh struck 11 minutes from time after Hwang In-Beom&#8217;s moment of magic had cancelled out Czech captain Ladislav Krejci\u2019s header in Guadalajara.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea made the brighter start, Son Heung-Min firing over with Lee Han-Beom heading over the bar before Paris St Germain\u2019s Lee Kang-In forced a save from Matej Kovar with an effort from outside the box.<\/p>\n<p>The Czechs, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/sport\/soccer\/2026\/0326\/1565041-prague-penalties-put-a-pin-in-irelands-world-cup-dream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">beat the Republic of Ireland on penalties in the play-offs<\/a> and are playing in their first World Cup since 2006, struggled to carve out any chances and the Koreans ended the first half with a flurry of opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Son again fired over and curled a shot wide of Kovar\u2019s post before the former Tottenham striker was unable to meet a return cross into the box in added time.<\/p>\n<p>Hwang and Lee Jae-Sung were denied by Kovar to start the second half, the goalkeeper also denying Son before the Czechs went ahead with their first real chance \u2013 Krejci, who spent last season on loan at Wolves, meeting Vladimir Coufal\u2019s long throw unmarked.<\/p>\n<p alt=\"Czechia 1-0 South Korea\" data-embed=\"comcast-player\" data-guid=\"epic-mpx-manual-33235\" data-id=\"ncQSPJf3C_Yq\" data-thumbnail=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/images\/00248167-900.jpg\">\n<p>The lead lasted just eight minutes, Hwang finally converting a Korean chance as his check back sent Kovar and Robin Hranac past the ball and he was able to find the empty net.<\/p>\n<p alt=\"South Korea 1-1 Czechia\" data-embed=\"comcast-player\" data-guid=\"epic-mpx-manual-33236\" data-id=\"omkBeNgj2npC\" data-thumbnail=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/images\/00248168-900.jpg\">\n<p>West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek had a headed effort ruled out for a clear offside and within three minutes, Oh turned in Hwang\u2019s low cross via Kovar\u2019s hand, although Korea needed a pair of fine saves by Kim Seung-Gyu to wrap up all three points.<\/p>\n<p alt=\"South Korea 2-1 Czechia\" data-embed=\"comcast-player\" data-guid=\"epic-mpx-manual-33237\" data-id=\"tvrBJQHzqKJt\" data-thumbnail=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/images\/0024816b-900.jpg\">\n<p>South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo said he had &#8220;told the boys to keep playing the way we&#8217;ve been playing&#8221; in the final quarter.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;The win itself makes me happy, but what\u2019s even more positive is that our boys won by not giving up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Czech Republic coach Miroslav Koubek rued &#8220;some mistakes&#8221;
