Outside a handful of live performances and guest appearances, Carly Simon<\/a> has been relatively quiet on the music front since her last album, 2009\u2019s Never Been Gone, which featured a selection of acoustic versions of her own work. But she\u2019s set to break her LP streak with Comes in Waves, her first album of original material since 2008\u2019s This Kind of Love. The new record is out August 14. Check out the first single, \u201cHowl,\u201d below.<\/p>\n

The album was co-written and produced with David Spencer and features one of the late John Fort\u00e9<\/a>\u2019s last recorded appearances, a press release notes. (Simon was a close friend of Fort\u00e9 and was instrumental in the rapper and Fugees producer\u2019s early release from prison in 2008.) Simon\u2019s children Ben and Sally Taylor and longtime collaborators Paul Samwell-Smith and Frank Filipetti also guest.<\/p>\n

Simon says of the single in a press release, \u201c\u2018Howl\u2019 lives in that space between betrayal and forgiveness, where anger has to be voiced before it can be released. It\u2019s about letting the frustration out so it doesn\u2019t sit and simmer. The song begins in anger, but it moves toward forgiveness, and speaks to any situation where trust has been broken.\u201d<\/p>\n
